CHENNAI: Nearly 9 lakh people in Chennai aged above 18 years, who are due for their second dose, have not taken the vaccines. Of the total 55.3 lakh population above 18, 46,69,050 have taken the shots.
The corporation on Sunday held its 28th vaccination camp at 1600 locations and covered 82,272 people. In this, 58,460 persons took their second dose. Out of the 55.30 lakh eligible population, about 55.05 people have taken their first dose, which is 99%.
Chennai mayor R Priya said 37 lakh people have benefited through the vaccine camps. “We have been sending people door to door to bring people who are due for a second dose to get vaccinated. Those who are yet to get vaccinated must come forward,” she said.
She said for every mega camp, the corporation takes a line-list, goes door to door and gives them an appointment slip. “We are making special efforts to vaccine the physically-challenged people,” she said. She urged people, who cannot move outside, to call the 1913 number to get vaccinated at their house. The mayor urged people to wear masks for their own safety.
City corporation commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi said Covid-19 is largely under control in the city. He said the city has no containment zone but the corporation has three to six cases in eight streets. “The streets are in Teynampet and nearby core city areas,” he said.
