Best foundations for dry skin, tested by a beauty writer

Thirsty skin can benefit from balancing niacinamide, hydrating hyaluronic acid and comforting vitamin E - (The Independent)

A good foundation for dry skin should do more than just blur imperfections, it should bring comfort back to a complexion that’s feeling tight, dull or prone to flaking. Much like a good moisturiser, the right base lays the groundwork for everything that follows, whether that’s a sweep of bronzer, one of the best cream blushes, or a quick slick of mascara before heading out the door.

Dry skin often comes down to reduced oil production and a weakened barrier, while dehydration is about a lack of water. But, importantly, both concerns benefit from foundations that treat skin kindly. That means looking for creamy textures, flexible pigments and ingredients that multitask while you wear them. Specifically, ingredients such as hyaluronic acid (which draws in moisture), niacinamide (which helps to even tone) and vitamin E (which softens rough patches). Radiant or satin finishes also tend to outperform flat mattes, which can emphasise dryness. If you prefer something lighter, many of the same hydrating technologies now appear in tinted moisturisers, too.

With those tips in mind, I’ve been busy testing a wide line-up of foundations to find the formulas that truly deliver moisture and glow. From high-street staples to luxury buys, here are my top picks.

Mac studio radiance serum-powered foundation

Rating: 5/5

Best: foundation for dry skin overall

Size: 30ml

Shades: 51

Why we love it

  • Wide shade range
  • Smoothing formula

After lots of trialling, Mac’s studio radiance serum-powered foundation was found to be the best foundation for dry skin.

It has a serum formula suitable for all skin types, and it’s available in more than 50 shades. Key ingredients include hydration-promoting hyaluronic acid, and I noted the formula’s smoothing effect on dry skin immediately after application.

I found the make-up buy offered a buildable layer and medium coverage, which stayed put throughout the day. It’s resistant to humidity, sweat and water – my base remained in place after wearing the foundation in the rain and during warm weather. I found it comforting on tight or dry patches of skin and noted a silky, soft, weightless finish that lasted from morning until night.

Estee Lauder futurist skintint serum foundation

Rating: 5/5

Best: long-wearing foundation for dry skin

Size: 30ml

Shades: 29

Why we love it

  • Useful pipette applicator
  • SPF inclusion

If you’re looking for something that combines great staying power and lightweight comfort, I’d recommend Estee Lauder’s futurist skintint serum foundation as the best long-wearing foundation for dry skin.

I particularly liked the fact that there is a pipette dropper built into the lid for mess-free application. This also meant I could build coverage with a little bit of foundation at a time. Key ingredients include a botanical oil containing soothing calendula and rosehip oils. I noted the formula offered radiance without any greasiness, and this demi-matte effect lingered for hours.

You can shop for the right shade according to undertone options such as neutral peach, cool pink and warm golden, and the foundation has the bonus of SPF20 inclusion, too.

Jones Road what the foundation

Rating: 4/5

Best: light coverage foundation for dry skin

Size: 35g

Shades: 12

Why we love it

  • Blends well
  • Hydrating ingredients

Jones Road what the foundation has a balm-like consistency, making it one of my favourites for light coverage. The moisturising skin tint offers a fresh, natural finish. The formula blends well, with each of the 12 shades designed to adapt to different skin tones. The balm has a midweight formula when applied to the skin and then rubs in to reveal a lighter effect and noticeable healthy-looking radiance and smoothness that’s ideal for dry skin. Skincare ingredients include jojoba oil and sodium hyaluronate, which both promote hydration.

It doesn’t really offer concealing benefits, but if you prefer a moisturising foundation with minimal coverage and just a subtle tint, this is the buy to try.

Ilia true skin serum foundation

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: anti-redness foundation for dry skin

Ilia’s true skin serum foundation is the perfect balance between a weightless formula and midweight coverage, meaning it’s super comfy to wear. I could see the benefits of each component’s inclusion from the product’s gentle, skin-softening effect. The vegan-friendly formula left my skin with a natural radiance, while also helping to improve the look of any redness.

It’s a coverage step up from tinted moisturiser, but with the same kind of overtly hydrating effect, which is a welcome foundation option for those prone to dry skin.

Best: glowy foundation for dry skin

  • Hydrating
  • SPF50 inclusion

Specifically created with normal to dry skin in mind, this foundation’s formula includes hydration-boosting hyaluronic acid, which contributed to the dewy finish we saw. The shades are arranged according to undertone, whether that’s golden, neutral or rosy, so, I found it easier to find the right match. The medium coverage base feels intensely smoothing and soothing immediately after application, and I saw it glide across the skin before offering a radiant, luminous finish.

It’s easy to build up, too, so you can add extra to any areas in need of more coverage, and I found the base effectively improved the appearance of flaky patches and any dullness.
