From cherry to soft mocha, these are the 12 autumn nail looks you'll soon be seeing everywhere

A collage featuring autumn nail designs: on the left is a hand with mocha-brown nails by nail artist Mateja Novakovic (@matejanova), and in the middle and right is a hand with soapy pink nails and bright red nails by nail artist Julia Diogo (@paintedbyjools) in a white-grey template with two nail polish spills. .

As a new season approaches, it's only natural to yearn for a change, whether that be in your home decor, wardrobe or choice of manicure. When that season is autumn, especially, the latter definitely tends to top our list of priorities, as luxe and moody hues replace sunny brights - coaxing us to the salon sooner rather than later...

So far, the 2026 nail trends have been nothing short of abundant, with summer alone welcoming stylish and juicy looks like sorbet nails and shimmery, aquatic marine manicures, along with many more vibrant looks. But as the countdown to September begins, we can't help but feel a pull towards richer shades - the sort that will perfectly complement cooler days, trench coats and soft knit jumpers. Think wine-like burgundy hues, burnt oranges and soft creams and browns. In fact, we're already seeing a few of these warmer, more autumnal shades emerging.

So, whether you're keen to embrace a classic red for the transitional weather ahead or are completely ready to trade sunny brights for deeper, cosier tones, we've curated a list of 12 very sophisticated manicures. With picks that feel both timeless and trendy, and will suit every nail length and preference.

12 autumn nail designs to carry you through the season in style

When it comes to choosing your autumn nails, adding some classic, seasonal hues into the mix, along with trending looks, is always a good way to go. After all, there's just something so chic and wholesome about matching your nails to the weather outside, whether that's with a pumpkin spice-esque burnt orange or a warming mocha brown.

And in case you're stuck for ideas, we've rounded up a bit of both - timeless and cosy shades, along with a few looks we think will dominate the season ahead.

Our autumn nail picks

If you want just one nail polish to tide you over this autumn, essie's Bordeaux gets our vote. This wine-like hue is so timeless and luxe-looking, while the formula delivers a pigmented and glossy finish in just a couple of coats. It's the perfect option for those who prefer to do their nails at home, or anyone on the hunt for a quick and easy autumnal look.

Red is always a timeless nail colour, but this rich tone feels especially for the cosy season ahead. Just two or three coats will leave you with a very chic and expensive-looking manicure - and it's great on your toes too.

If you're keen to embrace cosy coffee tones for autumn, this Manucurist polish is the ultimate pick. Aptly named 'Mocha' it offers a wash of warm brown to your nails.

1. Chestnut nails

We have a feeling that brown chestnut nails will be very popular this season. The cosy hue looks so chic with short nails, but equally, it pairs beautifully with longer almond styles too. Some may also find this sort of warm shade more wearable and versatile compared to a dark, wine-like red or aubergine shade.

A bright, classic red is always a good option for a transitional, in-between season manicure, but especially when autumn rolls around. Picture this luxe shade with a cream knit jumper, or alongside a camel trench coat.

With the cold weather approaching, what better time to wear mocha nails? Replicating steaming cups of chocolatey coffee, this cosy, warm brown shade evokes all things stylish and sophisticated - plus points for those who opt for a mirror-like chrome glaze on top.

4. Burgundy nails

If any nail colour was made to be worn in autumn, it's burgundy. Whether you pair it with a short square shape or a long almond manicure, this sultry shade never fails to look expensive and effortless. That said, short autumn nails are very popular this year, so we'd suggest layering this wine-like colour over a neat shape like squoval.

5. Tortoiseshell nails

If you're a fan of nail art, a tortoisehell-style pattern is the perfect choice for early autumn. It combines multiple warm shades that we would class as synonymous with the season; caramel browns and mocha shades, into a very chic and eye-catching design. Tortoiseshell is a popular pattern for accessories and so on, which makes this manicure feel very classic and wearable.

Muted colours are always a stylish and apt choice for autumn and none more so than this olive shade. It feels quite unique and individualistic compared to some of the more popular shades on this list, like red and burgundy.

RRP: £3.99

7. Navy blue nails

This rich yet moody navy tone is the ideal candidate for those wanting an alternative to classic neutral autumnal nail polish shades. It's stylish and slightly more niche than a burgundy (which seems to be on everyone's nails at the moment), but still just as wearable.

When in doubt, monochrome never fails. Either take the route of wearing the shade as a solid block colour or opt for the more subtle and contemporary choice of black French tip nails.

If you're not quite ready to embrace autumn's moodier hues and instead want a softer, transitional look, a milky nail polish or coconut shade is a lovely choice. It feels fresh and clean, almost like a palate cleanser but in manicure form - especially if you also pair it with a trimmed and neat nail length, as seen above.
