81-year-old retired IIT-Madras professor loses Rs 2.9 lakh to banking fraudster

MUMBAI: An 81-year-old man from Powai lost Rs2.9 lakh after a fraudster, who posed as a bank telecaller with a leading private sector bank, on Wednesday called and scared him that his savings bank account has been frozen and cannot do any banking transactions.

Powai police said the retired IIT-Madras professor has lost the money which was his pension. The fraud occurred at 5pm when he was told to share his banking details for activation. “Nine fraudulent transactions were carried out.

The senior citizen shared the details thinking that his daily activity of meeting daily expenses will end when the fraudster threatens that the account has been frozen. He immediately shared the bank details,” said a police officer at the Powai police station.—V Narayan
