9 of the best summer duvets for staying cool at night, tried and tested

These duvets are designed to be lightweight and breathable - (Sarah Jones)

As temperatures climb and heatwaves become part of the summer forecast, getting comfortable at night can feel like a challenge in itself – especially for anyone who naturally sleeps hot. If you’ve ever spent the night flipping your pillow to the cool side, throwing a leg out from under the covers, or waking up tangled in a duvet that suddenly feels far too heavy, it may be time to swap out your bedding for something more summer-friendly.

The best summer duvets are designed to feel light, breathable and cool, helping you stay comfortable when warm nights make sleeping difficult. Unlike winter-ready options that trap heat for insulation, summer duvets use lower tog ratings and lighter fillings to encourage airflow and prevent that stuffy, overheated feeling.

Tog ratings are particularly important when shopping around, as they measure how much warmth a duvet provides. “In the summer, you should opt for a seven tog duvet or below,” explains Hannah Shore, head of sleep science at Mattress Online. “If you find yourself struggling to sleep due to being too hot, or constantly sticking a leg out of the duvet to try and cool down, then try a lower tog duvet.” For those especially sensitive to warmer weather, she recommends choosing a 4.5 tog or lower.

Filling matters, too. Natural materials such as cotton or down are prized for their softness and breathability, while synthetic alternatives can be easier to wash, kinder to allergy sufferers and often a little more budget-friendly. To help narrow down the options, I tested a range of summer duvets to find the ones best suited to keeping cool through sticky summer nights.

Simba summer hybrid duvet

Rating: 5/5

Best: summer duvet overall

Why we love it

  • Excellent temperature regulation
  • Doesn’t sacrifice cosiness
  • Comes in a storage bag

Take note

  • Expensive

A pared-back version of Simba’s popular year-round model (£199, Simbasleep.com), this duvet is designed specifically with hot sleepers in mind – whether you regularly struggle with night sweats or are in the midst of a heatwave.

The zip bag (which is ideal for storing it during cooler months) is so compact that I questioned whether the right product had been sent at first. But alas, it really is just that lightweight. Dubious as to whether a duvet thin could actually feel comforting, I was surprised at how nice it felt. Yes, it’s light, but it still has that cocooning quality that makes you feel tucked in, just without any excess bulk or trapped heat.

Like many of Simba’s products, the summer hybrid duvet is made using stratos technology – a space-inspired fabric treatment that helps regulate your body temperature by absorbing and dissipating excess heat. Sounds complicated and a bit like a marketing gimmick, but I found it genuinely made a difference. While testing during a heatwave, I found it kept me cool without making me feel cold – a fine line that many summer duvets don't get quite right. Even during a muggy, no-breeze night, where sleep usually feels impossible, I didn’t wake up drenched in sweat or tossing around trying to find a cool spot.

Another bonus is that it’s machine washable. Granted, it’s not the most affordable option out there, but I think the higher price tag is well justified as a smarter, long-term buy that will last for several summers.

Dusk lightweight summer duvet

Rating: 4/5

Best: budget summer duvet

Why we love it

  • Low tog makes it ideal for hot sleepers
  • Great value
  • Easy to clean

Take note

  • Not quite as lofty as real down
  • May be too light for some, even in summer

Dusk’s lightweight summer duvet is, as the name suggests, ultra-light, genuinely cooling, and remarkably good value for the quality you get. At just 2.5 tog, it’s one of the lightest duvets you can get without switching to a sheet. Inside, it’s filled with a soft microfibre. While you won’t get quite the same luxurious loft as something like goose down, it has a wonderfully soft and airy texture. I didn’t experience any annoying clumps or flat spots and found that it has a gentle drape over the body rather than feeling rigid like some budget options can.

At 2.5 tog, duvets don’t get much lighter than this (Sarah Jones/The Independent)

Unlike some premium duvets that need specialist cleaning, this one is fully machine washable, which is a big win. I washed mine at 30C, let it air-dry, and found that it fluffed back up nicely with no clumping or shrinkage.

It punches well above its price bracket, and, unless you’re after the full five-star-hotel-down-duvet experience, it’s hard to fault.

Dunelm dorma full forever all seasons duvet

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: all-seasons duvet

Why we love it

  • All-seasons flexibility
  • The 3 tog duvet is ideal for summer
  • Machine washable
  • Premium feel

Take note

  • Popper attachments can come undone with lots of movement

For something you can use all year round, this duvet delivers year-round flexibility without skimping on comfort. An all-seasons duvet is essentially two separate duvets that can be used individually or fastened together for extra warmth. In this case, there’s a 3 tog duvet for summer, a 7.5 tog for spring and autumn, and the option to combine both to create a 10.5 tog for when winter rolls in.

This light and airy duvet (Sarah Jones/The Independent)

Despite being synthetic, it has a pleasantly plump, down-like feel that’s soft, evenly distributed, and holds its loft well. I think the 3 tog duvet alone is a great option for summer as it’s light and airy, but still provides that “covered” feeling some of us can’t sleep without. If you prefer a bit more weight (but still want to stay cool), the 7.5 tog might work well too, especially in milder weather.

Another bonus is that it’s machine washable, which is ideal if you want something low-maintenance. The filling held up well in the wash, and after a bit of fluffing, it retained its shape nicely. You can even pop it in the tumble dryer on a low heat.

Versatile, comfortable and great quality, for the price, it feels far more luxurious than you’d expect.

Feather & Black soft as down deluxe duvet

Rating: 4/5

Best: low maintenance summer duvet

Why we love it

  • Feels like down but without the heaviness
  • Breathable cotton cover
  • Hypoallergenic

Take note

  • Less dense than natural down, which some people might not prefer

Much like Bedfolk’s duvet, this has been designed to have the plushness of natural down without using any animal products. It’s not quite as lofty as the real deal, but it does have an impressively soft and airy feel that will keep you cool and comfortable. The fill is evenly distributed and doesn’t clump, which I found avoids any hot spots.

While not as lofty as a down duvet, we found this to be soft (Sarah Jones/The Independent)

It scores high points because it is hypoallergenic and machine washable, making it a practical and low-maintenance choice for busy households. I put it through the wash a few times, and it didn’t clump or lose its loft.

For anyone looking for a duvet that’s easy to care for and genuinely enhances summer sleep, this one hits all the right notes.

Soak and Sleep soft as down microfibre summer duvet

Rating: 4/5

Best: heavy summer duvet

Why we love it

  • Emulates the loft and softness of natural down
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Affordable

Take note

  • Could feel too weighty for some

A heavyweight duvet that can keep you cool might seem like a bit of an oxymoron, but somehow that’s exactly what this achieves. Available in a 3 or 4.5 tog (I tried the latter), the microfibre filling mimics the plushness of real down so well that it’s somewhat heavier than you’d expect. It really gave me a cosseting feel of a cosy duvet, yet it stayed breathable and moisture-wicking through even the balmiest of nights.

You have the option to attach this to another of the brand’s duvets come winter (Sarah Jones/The Independent)

I also liked that it comes with cufflink fastenings, so you can pair this duvet with another from the brand, giving you the flexibility to go from a 3 tog to an 18 tog duvet come winter.

As with all synthetic duvets, it’s a great option for those prone to allergies. It's also refreshingly low-effort to care for – just pop it in the washing machine and dry it thoroughly (tumble drying on low works fine), and it fluffs right back up. No more trips to the dry cleaners.

A summer duvet that feels indulgent but performs in the heat, this is a brilliant pick. It’s like having the best parts of a cosy winter duvet, minus the stifling warmth.

Bedfolk the down alternative duvet

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: down alternative summer duvet

Why we love it

  • Luxury feel without feathers
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Premium quality

Take note

  • Professional laundering recommended

If you’re after a cloud-like feel of real down without the feathers, this delivers. Mimicking the feel of real down, it’s light, lofty, and has that gentle rustling sound you usually only get with the real thing.

It’s breathable but has just enough weight to give that comforting tucked-in feeling without feeling clammy. The cotton cover also helps, as it remains crisp and cool to the touch all night.

One downside is that you will need to get this professionally laundered. But if you don’t eat or drink in bed, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. That said, it does feel like something you'd find in a fancy hotel.

Panda cloud duvet

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: summer duvet those who run cold

The Panda cloud duvet might seem like an odd choice for summer as it’s rated at 10.5 tog (a level typically reserved for cooler months). But thanks to its clever design and naturally breathable materials, it’s surprisingly well-suited for hot sleepers or those who still want a cosy feel.

A great option if you run cold (Sarah Jones/The Independent)
A great option if you run cold (Sarah Jones/The Independent)

I found that it felt cooler, lighter, and fresher than its tog rating suggests. But equally, it was cosy and insulating during colder nights, making it a great investment, especially given summers in the UK are unpredictable. Similarly, it’ll be great if you run cold.

Helpfully, it’s also machine washable and dries a lot faster than the other duvets I tested, so you can keep yours fresher for longer. Better yet, if you have a panda bedding set, there are nifty corners on the duvet that can be attached to hidden straps on all the brand’s covers. This prevents the duvet from bunching up under the sheets during the night.

Scooms Hungarian goose down duvet

Rating: 4/5

Best: luxury summer duvet

Why we love it

  • Luxurious soft cotton sateen cover
  • Natural down filling feels airy and premium

Take note

  • Expensive compared to synthetic alternatives
  • Slight rustling noise won’t suit everyone

I tested the 2.5 tog Scooms duvet during a run of sticky summer nights and a couple of genuinely unbearable heatwaves, and it quickly became the duvet I looked forward to getting into. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly light it felt but without that flimsy, barely-there sensation some summer duvets have. The Hungarian goose down filling gave it a soft, airy loft that draped beautifully over the body, and the cotton sateen cover felt cool and silky against the skin. I stayed comfortably cool throughout the night, but it still had enough weight to feel cosy rather than clinical.

There is a faint rustling sound from the natural filling when you move around, but personally I found it comforting – it gave the whole duvet a proper luxury hotel feel. It’s also naturally breathable and moisture-wicking, which really helped during humid nights. Despite being down-filled, it’s machine washable too, although you’ll need a large drum and patience when drying it properly.

M&S smart wash and dry 1 tog duvet

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: summer duvet for heatwaves

Why we love it

  • Brilliant for very hot weather and hot sleepers
  • Washes and dries quickly
  • Affordable compared to natural duvets

Take note

  • May feel too thin for some people

This duvet felt completely different from the weightier and naturally-filled duvets like the above from Scooms, but in a good way. During the recent heatwaves, there were nights when even a standard summer duvet felt too much, and the M&S 1 tog was exactly what I wanted. It’s incredibly light – more like sleeping under a cool soft layer than a traditional duvet – and it never trapped heat around me overnight. If you’re someone who usually ends up abandoning your duvet at 3am in July, this is probably your ideal pick.

The synthetic filling has a soft, smooth feel without any crunchiness or rustling, and I found it surprisingly comforting considering how thin it is. It also felt cooler to the touch than I expected. The biggest selling point for me, though, was practicality: it can be machine washed and dries quickly enough to be back on the bed the same day, which is ideal in summer. The anti-allergy fibres are another bonus for sensitive sleepers.

Your questions on the best summer duvets, answered

What is the best dummer duvet?

Is it the cheapest summer duvet out there? No. But if you’re constantly overheating at night or just want something lighter and smarter for the warmer months, Simba’s summer hybrid duvet is worth the investment. After all, a better night’s sleep is priceless.

If your budget doesn’t quite stretch that far, the Dunelm all-seasons duvet is my next top pick. I loved that it's the kind of duvet you can buy once and not think about again until it's time to switch things up, and it’s really easy to care for.

How I tested summer duvets

I tested a range of summer duvets over several warm weeks, assessing each one in a real-life home setting. I looked at several factors, including:

What type of duvet is best for summer?

When it comes to choosing the perfect summer duvet for you, it’s important to consider the material from which it is made. Natural duvets, such as those that have duck and goose feather filling as well as down, tend to be more insulating, which means they can feel much warmer with less filling. However, if you pick one with a low tog, it should still be breathable enough to be suitable for the summer months. When your duvet has a higher down-to-feather ratio, it will be more lightweight.

Wool duvets are chunkier, denser and hypoallergenic. While they are typically reserved for winter, they retain air well, which can keep you cool in the summer, too.

Alternatively, synthetic duvets are filled with hollow fibres or microfibres. The former is more effective at trapping warmth, while the latter is a higher quality option that mimics down filling but with a more lightweight feel, which makes them great choices for those who want lighter duvets or suffer from allergies.

What tog is a summer duvet?

The higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet. So, when shopping for a summer duvet for your bedroom, an ideal tog rating is 4.5 or less.

However, you can also buy specially designed cooling duvets that are perfect for summer, which can measure up to 11 tog.
