A 10-year partnership worth £65 million has been agreed between East Yorkshire firm Transwaste Recycling and Aggregates and North Lincolnshire Council.
The company, already serving the local authority for the past five years, has secured the long-term renewal to manage almost 50,000 tonnes of residual waste and bulky items annually.
Transwaste produces refuse-derived fuel at its Melton site, collecting from the waste transfer station in Midland Road, Scunthorpe, where 46,000 tonnes pass through annually. Bulky waste is picked up from eight different household recycling centres across the borough, with around 2,700 tonnes anticipated on a yearly basis.

Paul Hornshaw, managing director of Transwaste, said: “Securing this local contract is fantastic for us as a company which supports jobs and further investment into our business, the local community and region. Transwaste is committed, not only to people and innovation, but also to the council’s carbon reduction plans.
“After successful delivery of an initial five year contract, the new deal makes this a 15 year partnership with North Lincolnshire Council, to process their waste and recycle metals, plastic, cardboard, and RDF for clean energy recovery, ensuring that less than one per cent goes to landfill.”
A haulage contract is also part of the agreement for the firm that celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2022. Now employing 103 people and turning over £29 million, it is looking forward to supporting the local authority’s ‘LiveWell North Lincolnshire’ vision to become net-zero by 2030, focusing on being a “clean, green and safe place to live”.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: "We have ambitious plans to eradicate any waste from any North Lincolnshire family going to landfill – we’re already below one per cent and now is the time to double down on the commitment to push even harder.
"While the council carries on doing everything it can to eradicate waste going to landfall, we still need residents to play their part too, lots of people making simple, small changes can have a huge impact.”
Since picking up the residual waste contract, Transwaste has also managed gully waste since 2021, processing a further 7,000 tonnes into compost and RDF.
As part of the commitment, Transwaste will also further its fundraising and voluntary resource work with Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Humber Rescue Independent Lifeboat Charity over the next decade. Its commitment to the communities it operates in saw it named as a finalist in last year's Hull Live Business Awards.
Cllr David Rose, the council’s cabinet member for environment, added: “It is great to have found a partner which shares this vision and is investing in the technology to make this a reality. As well as using green transport and plant equipment, the company is donating to tree-planting projects and is committed to employing local people and supporting schools and colleges.
“This is all part of the bigger picture of a green future for North Lincolnshire, where everyone can make a difference, from companies like Transwaste to residents pledging to recycle their own waste and swap bins for composters.”
