Over 600,000 families across the country will receive double Child Benefit payment worth €280 per child on Tuesday, Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys has confirmed.
It was announced during September’s Budget that parents would receive a one-off double Child Benefit payment as part of the Government’s cost of living package.
The measure means that rather than €140 being paid in respect of 1.2 million children across the State from today, parents will receive €280 per child under the age of 16. The payment is also given for children who remain in full-time education until their 18th birthday.

Minister Humphreys said that 638,000 families will benefit from the double payment. She explained: “Child Benefit is an extremely important income support that reaches hundreds of thousands of hardworking families. As Minister, I’m deeply conscious of the difficulties families are facing right now in meeting their bills.
“This double payment is one of eight lump sum payments that I secured as part of the Budget to help households during this extremely challenging period.
“The double child benefit payment will be received in people’s bank accounts beginning from today. It follows the Autumn Double Payment last month, which supported 1.4 million pensioners, carers, people with disabilities and working families.
“And over the course of the next few weeks, I will be announcing the details of further lump sum payments to support people with their household bills.”
Other lump sum payments coming soon include a €400 lump sum fuel allowance payment, a €200 payment for people living alone, a €500 payment for carers, a €500 support for people with disabilities and a €500 payment for those in receipt of the Working Family Payment.
The traditional “Christmas bonus”, that sees those on social welfare receive a double weekly payment, will also be paid out the week beginning December 5.
Householders will begin to see electricity credits worth €200 appear on their bills from this week. The credit will be applied to bills either this month or in December, depending on when a household receives their bill.
It's the first of the three promised payments from the Government, with the second payment coming in January or February and a third in March or April.
