There’s something wonderfully playful about the way Tatsuya Tanaka looks at the world. As a Japanese miniature artist and photographer, he has a talent for spotting possibilities in things most of us would simply walk past. A piece of food can become a landscape, a household object can turn into part of a scene, and something sitting quietly on a desk can suddenly take on an entirely new role once his tiny figures enter the picture.
Tanaka has been exploring this idea through his Miniature Calendar project since 2011, creating a new miniature scene each day. His work is rooted in the Japanese concept of mitate, which involves seeing one thing as something else, and that playful change in perspective is at the heart of his art. After more than 15 years of creating these little worlds, he has found countless ways to bring together miniature figures and ordinary objects, often with a clever visual connection or a small detail that makes the scene especially fun to discover.
