The field of 144 at the 2024 Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches is down to 68 after the cut came on Saturday morning at PGA National.
Play was halted for darkness after each of the first two rounds, and that meant 13 golfers had to return to the course Saturday morning to finish their second rounds. There were actually 14 who hadn’t played 36 holes by Friday night but Chandler Phillips withdrew with one hole to go. He was 6 over.
The tournament, in its first year with a new name, has $9 million up for grabs, with $1.62 million going to the winner. Chris Kirk is the defending champion and he’s tied for 24th. Bud Cauley is the solo leader after two days. He’s at 11 under. The cut was 2 under.
There is a slew of others not so lucky after a windy Friday at PGA National, many of due to some wild fluctuations between the score they signed for Thursday compared to their scores on Friday.
Daniel Berger, 1 over (68-75)
Things were looking up for Berger, making his fourth start since returning to the Tour after missing nearly 20 months with back issues, after his first-round 68. He probably went to bed Thursday thinking he was in good position to make his third cut of 2024, but he slid back Friday with a 75, a round that featured just one birdie and five bogeys.
Ben Taylor, 5 over (68-79)
Taylor had to be feeling good after a Thursday 68 but things went south Friday when he had a big swing in the wrong direction.
Taylor had two double bogeys, six bogeys and just two birdies Friday. After making par of the first four holes, all his damage came over the final 14 holes, just a day after making five birdies on the Champion course. Taylor has missed four out of five cuts with a T-64 at the Farmers Insurance Open his best finish.
J.B. Holmes, 6 over (68-81)
Holmes had four straight bogeyes on Nos. 2 through 5, and later had back-to-back doubles on Nos. 10 and 11 before signing for a 10-over 81. Holmes is now 0-for-5 making the weekend in the 2024 season. He has just two scores in the 60s in 11 rounds so far this year.
Eric Cole, 7 over (78-71)
The reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year has kept it rolling in 2024, making six cuts in seven outings, including a top-10 at the Genesis Invitational, before taking a week off.
But this week, his game was just a bit off, as he shot 78 and followed that up with an even-par 71 on Friday.
Ryan Moore, 2 over (65-79)
Ryan Moore came through in the clutch to close 2023, becoming the only player to move into the top 125 in the FedEx Cup Fall Series to earn full status for 2024.
He then missed the cut in the first four events of the new year before finally snapping that skid with a T-60 at the Mexico Open at Vidanta last week.
This week, Moore holed out from 113 yards for eagle on the par-4 13th en route to a 65 and things appeared to finally be trending up.
Friday, however, was not pretty, as Moore was 14 shots worse, shooting an 8-over 79, his worst round by five shots in 2024 and his worst round overall since a 79 in the final round of the 2022 Memorial.
All the damage in the second round at the Cognizant came between the second and 13th hole, as Moore went 9 over during that 12-hole stretch.
Thomas Detry, 11 over (73-80)
Detry had a disastrous Friday, shooting a 9-over 80, score that included an 8 on the par-4 sixth hole after he needed six putts.
