6 Aldi Grocery Items That Outmatch Costco for Big Savings

Joan Cros / NurPhoto

Is a Costco membership worth it, or are you better off just shopping at Aldi? For certain items, Aldi is definitely the better choice. Plus, you don’t end up with a needless surplus because Costco requires you to buy in bulk.

Skip the Costco crowds and pick up the following pantry essentials at Aldi.

1. Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup

  • Costco price: $2.06/18.6 oz.
  • Aldi price: $1.15/10.75 oz.

Chicken noodle soup is a must-have for colder months. At Costco, you would pay $16.49 for an 8-pack of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup. However, buying individual cans at Aldi still comes out to be the slightly cheaper option, saving you roughly a cent per ounce.

2. Chicken Broth

  • Costco price: $0.96/14.5 oz.
  • Aldi price: $1.55/32 oz.

Chicken broth is necessary for so many recipes, especially when hosting large gatherings. Shoppers should opt for Aldi’s store brand Chef’s Cupboard. They’ll get 32 ounces of broth for just $1.55. Meanwhile, while Costco sells a 12-pack of Swanson chicken broth, each can is only 14.5 ounces — that means you’re paying more, but getting less volume.

3. Graham Crackers

  • Costco price: $2.75/box
  • Aldi price: $2.19/box

Looking to make some delicious pie crusts? Stock up on graham crackers for $2.19 a box at Aldi. Costco sells a 4-pack of the same size boxes for $10.99, which comes out to $2.75 a box.

4. Green Beans

  • Costco price: $1.08/can
  • Aldi price: $0.55/can

Green beans are a tasty, nutritious side. By purchasing Aldi’s store brand Happy Harvest Canned Cut Green Beans, you’ll save $0.53 more per can than if you bought them from Costco. At Costco, you’d have to buy a 12-pack of Del Monte Canned Cut Green Beans for $12.99, coming out to $1.08 a can.

5. Garlic Powder

  • Costco price: $0.56/oz.
  • Aldi price: $0.35/oz.

Looking to restock your spice drawer with some versatile garlic powder? Though you get more in the Kirkland Signature 18-ounce package from Costco, it will cost more per ounce than at Aldi. Each jar of Aldi’s Stonemill garlic powder has 3.12 ounces, but costs less per ounce than Costco.

6. Marinara Sauce

  • Costco price: $0.24/oz
  • Aldi price: $0.13/oz

Since Aldi offers marinara sauce from their house brand, Priano, they’re going to be able to offer it cheaper than Costco — just $3.19 for 24 ounces. Costco only has name brands when it comes to marinara sauce. This 2-pack of 28-ounce jars of Rao’s for $13.61 will cost you more than going to Aldi.
