Among the early leaders at the 2023 British Open on Thursday was a name you may not know as well as some of the other big stars playing the links: Christo Lamprecht.
If you woke up on the East coast, you saw his name on top of the leaderboard, and yes, with that (a) next to his name, he’s an amateur playing at Royal Liverpool. How cool is that?

So it’s a good time to get to know him as the tournament continues — as we see if his name stays near the top throughout, let’s run through some facts about him:
1
He hails from South Africa
He was born in George, Western Cape. He’s just 22 years old.
2
He won the 128th Amateur Championship to get here
Lamprecht’s victory is also monumental for other reasons, including his exemptions into majors. He’ll be in the field next month for the 151st Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, and he also has a spot in the 2024 Masters and U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.
