5 TEs the Colts should watch at the NFL combine

The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine officially got underway with the start of workouts Thursday, and they’ll continue Friday with the defensive backs and tight ends taking the field.

The Indianapolis Colts will have a keen eye on all three positions—safeties and cornerbacks are lumped together—considering they are relatively high priorities in terms of needs this offseason.

While the combine is mostly important for the medical reports and formal interviews with prospects, the on-field testing does carry some weight for the Colts. Their investment in high-end athletes has been well-documented throughout Chris Ballard’s tenure.

Though the tight end room is relatively crowded, the Colts could still use a draft pick on a rookie tight end

Here are five tight ends the Colts should watch during Friday’s workouts at the NFL combine:

1
Brock Bowers, Georgia

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

The belle of the ball at the tight end position, Bowers is in play for the No. 15 overall pick if he gets that far in the draft. His elite explosiveness, short-area quickness and YAC abilities make him a hot commodity.

2
Ja'Tavion Sanders, Texas

Andrew Dieb-USA TODAY Sports

If the Colts aren’t able to grab Bowers in the first round, Sanders is a nice consolation price on Day 2. Built more in the move tight end profile, Sanders is a strong over-the-middle option as a receiver.

3
Theo Johnson, Penn State

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

An excellent blocker and could be used as an extension of the offensive line, Johnson also has experience being flexed out. He is a strong route runner with reliable hands and could eventually turn into a starting Y tight end.

4
A.J. Barner, Michigan

Barner is not an elite receiving option and would be used more as an in-line blocker, which is a role he excels in. He would be an intriguing Day 3 pick to pair with Jelani Woods, Kylen Granson and Will Mallory.

5
Jaheim Bell, Florida State

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Though a bit shorter for a tight end (6-foot-2), Bell fits into the H-back role nicely as a receiving option. He’s a solid player with the ball in his hands and has shown the ability to get open consistently.
