5 Snoring Patterns That Are Worth a Sleep Test

When Snoring Stops Mid-Breath

Snoring that pauses, a few seconds of silence followed by a gasp or a snort, is the pattern most consistently associated with obstructive sleep apnoea. During those silent seconds, the airway has collapsed enough to block airflow entirely. The body eventually jolts itself back into breathing, usually without the person waking fully. A bed partner often notices this before the sleeper does. The Indian Council of Medical Research has flagged obstructive sleep apnoea as significantly underdiagnosed in India, partly because the pauses go unwitnessed when someone sleeps alone. A polysomnography test, the standard overnight sleep study, measures how many of these events happen per hour. Fewer than five per hour is considered normal. Above fifteen, the classification shifts to moderate, and the cardiovascular load starts to matter. Anyone whose snoring includes these breath-hold pauses has a reason to get counted, not just reassured.
