Whether you are looking to upgrade to an SUV for more space, better fuel efficiency or to take advantage of the latest safety features and technology, finding an affordable option is important.

In this article, we’ll cover the five best SUVs under $35,000 to buy in 2026.

1. Subaru Outback

The 2026 Subaru Outback combines practicality, safety and reliability, making it a great buy. Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is one of the premium safety packages on the market. In fact, EyeSight has been found to lower rear-end crashes with injuries by 85%.

Additionally, the Outback is known for being a smooth ride in a spacious cabin, which is perfect for daily travel or long-distance commutes. The 2026 model starts at around $35,000, according to Car and Driver.

“The Outback is one of the most reliable vehicles available. It’s surprising that it starts at under $35K, given its performance, reliability and value retention,” said Melanie Musson, auto industry expert with AutoInsurance.org. “With AWD standard, you can appreciate better control in adverse weather conditions. The safety features and interior comfort make it hard to beat the value.”

2. Chevy Trailblazer

The Chevy Trailblazer is another solid SUV to buy in 2026. With a good fuel economy, roomy interior and affordable price, the Trailblazer is a popular option. A few of the other features that make it a great purchase include multiple trim options and different tech connections, like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The turbo engine also packs a lot of power under the hood, offering low-end torque for city driving. The 2026 Chevy Trailblazer starts at $25,095.

“The Trailblazer comes in at under $35K, even for upper trim levels, so you can choose many upgrades and still come in under budget,” said Musson. “It has excellent safety ratings and is generally reliable.”

3. Honda CR-V

The Honda brand is known for low maintenance costs, durability and longevity, with the CR-V being no exception. A few of the features that make the Honda CR-V a solid buy include its high fuel efficiency, large cargo capacity, user-friendliness and advanced safety features. If you don’t plan on keeping the CR-V long-term, it also has a high resale value. The base model for the 2026 model starts at $32,370.

“A 2020-22 Honda CR-V will cost $26,000 to $32,000,” said Ryan Salata, Marketing Director of Specialty Auto Parts USA. “They are dependable, with the fewest complaints about cooling, electrical and transmission systems in the industry for compact SUVs. The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is reliable, which bodes well for you in years to come.”

4. Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid

The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is an excellent SUV option if you want both electric and gas drivetrains. Even though it is a compact SUV, users report a spacious interior and excellent fuel efficiency. The EPA estimates 46 mpg city and 39 mpg highway for a combined 42 mpg, per Car and Driver. Starting at $30,745, this SUV is ideal for city travel, cross-country trips and everything in between.

“The Corolla Cross Hybrid starts well under $35K, so you can afford an upgrade trim package and still keep the final price around $35K,” said Musson. “The hybrid engine delivers excellent fuel economy in town. The hybrids come with standard AWD, making the Corolla Cross one of the best-value vehicles.”

5. Mazda CX-30

The Mazda CX-30 is a larger SUV compared to the other options we’ve covered, making it perfect for families. It resembles the Lexus and Acura brands in terms of premium features and sporty handling.
