Entering Sunday’s regular-season opener, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is the most popular bet to win 2023 NFL MVP at multiple sportsbooks.
Hurts finished second in MVP voting last year, after logging nearly 4,500 total yards (3,701 passing, 760 rushing) and 35 total touchdowns (22 passing, 13 rushing), leading Philadelphia to a Super Bowl appearance.
Buy Eagles TicketsWith the Week 1 matchup against New England fast approaching, we’re looking at five reasons Hurts will win the MVP award in 2023.
1
Dynamic supporting cast
Philadelphia had the NFL’s most explosive offense in 2022 and all GM Howie Roseman did was add Rashaad Penny, Olamide Zaccheaus and D’Andre Swift.
Hurts has star power at every position and a dynamic duo at the wide receiver spot, along with the NFL’s best offensive line.
Hurts won’t have to do it all and he’ll have a top five skill position group as his supporting cast.
2
OC Brian Johnson
The Eagles first year offensive coordinator has known Hurts since the young quarterback was four years old, and he’ll enter 2023 with a unique chemistry and understanding of his signal-caller.
Johnson will feature the running backs more in the passing game, and he’ll have Hurts playing accurate and efficient in the biggest games.
3
NFL's toughest schedule
the Philadelphia Eagles will face a six to seven-week gauntlet of playoff teams starting in Week 9.
Over eight weeks starting in Week 9 and including the bye, the Eagles will face the Cowboys twice, along with the Chiefs, Bills, 49ers, and Giants.
If Hurts can beat Aaron Rodgers, Dak Prescott (twice), Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Brock Purdy and Kirk Cousins among others, he’ll have a huge case for winning the award.
4
Destructive defense
Philadelphia can be vulnerable up the middle on defense, but there’s no doubt that Sean Desai’s group will cause turnovers and they’ll create sacks while pressuring the quarterback.
The Eagles like to get out to early leads and the defense is setup to give the All-Pro quarterback plenty of opportunities to score points on the opposition.
5
History is on Jalen Hurts' side
The past 10 MVP winners were quarterbacks, with Adrian Peterson being the last non-QB MVP in 2012.
Since 2003, only Peterson, Shaun Alexander and LaDainian Tomlinson have been non-QB MVP’s and they were elite, All-Pro running backs.
For more history, 15 of the last 16 MVPs were quarterbacks.
Hurts will be in the race if he can remain healthy, efficient and elite while continuing to win.
