5 Rangers vs Tottenham clashes as furious Gazza and Ian Ferguson spat remembered

Rangers' Premier League double header concludes this weekend as they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Ibrox. A strong 3-1 victory over West Ham in midweek has Giovanni van Bronckhorst 's side building momentum but now they face a serious test with the new season moving ever closer.

Expectations are high for Antonio Conte's Spurs this year and it's all set for a fascinating 90 minutes on Saturday. These are familiar foes and this will be the 12th recorded meeting between the teams.

They will also be competing for the Walter Tull Memorial Cup. The trophy honours Tull as the first outfield black player in British football and he had links to both clubs throughout his career - he signed for Tottenham in 1909 and later penned a deal at Rangers in 1917 despite having spent the previous two years on the front line of World War I. Tragically, his death in France in 1918 meant he never made an appearance for the Ibrox side.

His example is just one of the close ties between the clubs. Here, Record Sport Online looks back over five meetings down the years.

Tottenham 3 Rangers 4 - 2016

With several weeks between the conclusion of the Championship season and a Scottish Cup Final date with Hibs, Mark Warburton's Rangers found themselves at a loose end.

The solution was to arrange a behind closed doors friendly with a young Spurs side to keep themselves fresh for a monumental trip to Hampden. And so they travelled to London for an entertaining clash at the Premier League club's Hotspur Way training facility.

The teams served up seven goals on the day, with Rangers edging it against a side featuring Harry Kane and Dele Alli. They did, however, go on to lose one of the most dramatic Hampden finals in history.

Rangers 2 Tottenham 0 - 2004

The last friendly between the teams played in front of fans, Alex McLeish's side ran out convincing winners against Jacques Santini's side. Dado Prso impressed shortly after his arrival from Monaco, netting the second goal after Nacho Novo had given Rangers the lead.

Prso pounced on an error from Stephen Carr and a young Chris Burke very nearly added a third near the end. McLeish also fielded Liverpool's Gregory Vignal in the second-half ahead of the defender completing a loan move.

Spurs striker Robbie Keane was also stretchered off after less than half an hour in a match that was a sign of things to come for the London club. Santini, who was only appointed that summer, later resigned after just 13 games.

Rangers 1 Tottenham 0 - 1989

This lively encounter in the late 1980s pushed the term "friendly" to its limits. The fixture ended in a single goal victory for Rangers but more memorable was Paul Gascoigne 's first appearance at Ibrox, six years before he made it his home.

What exactly caused Gascoigne and Ian Ferguson to suddenly square up isn't clear from archive footage but within a few seconds a mass of blue and white shirts are stepping in to keep the pair apart.

The incident appears to have blown over until Ferguson, shall we say, leaves a bit on Gascoigne when the ball breaks from a corner and its not long until both are booked by the referee.

Both are eventually booked by the referee but not before Paul Stewart and Mo Johnston also go face to face. Trevor Steven's goal proved enough to give Rangers victory on the day.

Tottenham 1 Rangers 0 - 1982

Another pre-season meeting, a goal from Gary Mabbutt was all that separated the teams at Ibrox. Manager John Greig had spent big in the summer and fielded a new look Rangers side that included Robert Pritz, Dave McKinnon and Craig Paterson.

They were denied on the day by a superb performance from Spurs keeper Ray Clemence.

Tottenham 8 Rangers 4 (aggregate) - 1962

The only European meeting in the two clubs' history, Spurs advanced in the Cup Winners' Cup over two thrilling legs. The English side triumphed 5-2 in a convincing victory at White Hart Lane.

They made it two from two at Ibrox in the return, edging out Rangers 3-2 in front of a capacity crowd. Bobby Smith's double and a goal from Jimmy Greaves trumped strikes from Davie Wilson and Ralph Brand.

A first round exit was disappointing for the Ibrox side but tempered by the fact they were beaten by the eventual winners. Tottenham went on to defeat Atletico Madrid in the final.
