5 Premier League wonderkids who could follow in James Garner's footsteps and shine in EFL

The 2021-22 campaign may have only just finished but the transfer window reopens on Friday.

Clubs will already be plotting their moves with regards next season. One of the most opportunistic markets for teams in the English Football League (EFL) is the loan market.

Season after season teams uncover a borrowed gem from top flight sides and last season saw a clutch of Premier League youngsters impress out on loan. James Garner was one of the biggest success stories, with the Manchester United midfielder dazzling in a temporary stint at Nottingham Forest as he helped them secure a top flight return after 23 years away.

Now, Mirror Football looks at five players contracted to Premier League teams who could well follow in Garner's footsteps next term.

Elliot Anderson

Newcastle midfielder Anderson pulled up plenty of trees in his loan spell at Bristol Rovers in the second half of last season.

The 19-year-old racked up hugely impressive stats of seven goals and six assists in just 21 outings as Joey Barton's side clinched the most dramatic of promotions into the third tier on the final day of the campaign.

Such was Anderson's impact on the Gas that one recruitment official referred to the youngster as a “League Two cheat code”. Next season may well see him loaned out again although it will almost certainly be higher up the pyramid. He has already been linked with a clutch of Championship clubs and that would seem the most logical progression for the talented teen.

Cameron Archer

Aston Villa striker Archer enjoyed a breakthrough season, catching the eye last August when he scored a hat-trick for his parent club in an EFL Cup win.

Further impressive cameos followed before he was despatched out to Preston North End to test his mettle in the unrelenting Championship. Archer sufficiently impressed, scoring seven in 20 for the Lilywhites. That form earned him a call-up to the England under-21s side this summer and Tuesday night saw Archer net his first goal for Lee Carsley's side just four minutes after coming off the bench.

With Villa expected to strengthen their forward options this summer, Archer may well benefit from a full season out on loan in the second tier.

Which young Premier League player would most benefit from a loan spell away? Let us know here

Amad Diallo

It is easy to forget that Manchester United forked out a whopping £37million on winger Diallo back in early 2021.

But he has made just nine outings in all that time, spending the second part of last season on loan at Scottish giants Rangers.

Still only 19, Diallo offers plenty of attacking guile but could be considered still rough around the edges. His 14 appearances up in Glasgow divided opinion but a loan spell in the Championship may well be the next logical step as he aims to force his way into the thinking of new United chief Erik ten Hag.

Kaide Gordon

Liverpool attacker Gordon is still only 17 but impressed enough to win a handful of senior appearances for Jurgen Klopp's side last term.

He arrived from Derby in early 2021, having made just a solitary outing for the Rams.

A loan move to a team in the EFL, whether it be for a full campaign or just a half-season, could be just the tonic needed for him to aid to his development. There would doubtless be plenty of Championship clubs interested.

CJ Egan-Riley

The 19-year-old defender featured in three senior games for Manchester City last season and perhaps a sign of his growing reputation was shown in the latter stage of the season.

Pep Guardiola named him in the matchday squad for six of City's last nine league games, making his Premier League debut in the 5-0 win against Newcastle.

At home at right-back he could benefit from a season out on loan in the cut and thrust of the Championship, just as Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Tommy Doyle experienced last term.
