Flaxseed: The Lignan That Mimics Estrogen
Forty grams of ground flaxseed a day, roughly three tablespoons stirred into dal, roti dough, or a morning glass of buttermilk, reduced hot flash composite scores significantly in a 2005 randomised controlled trial published in Obstetrics & Gynecology by Dodin et al. The active compounds are lignans, a class of phytoestrogens that bind weakly to estrogen receptors and partially compensate for the hormonal drop that triggers flashes in the first place.
