5 famous faces who made football debuts including One Direction star and TV chef

Celebrities and football don't always go hand in hand.

You only have to think of 'that' Diana Ross penalty at the 1994 World Cup opening ceremony (Youtube it if for whatever reason you have failed to witness it). But in recent years the crossover between stars and soccer has been more commonplace.

On Monday, Enter Shikari band member Chris Batten 'signed' terms with non-league side St Albans City. The bass and vocalist will swap the stage for the pitch as he makes an unexpected debut at the age of 35 for fundraising friendly with Dagenham and Redbridge.

Here, Mirror Football takes a look at five other celebrities who have stepped over the white line down the years.

Louis Tomlinson

The former One Direction star infamously 'joined' boyhood club Doncaster Rovers in February 2014. He made just one appearance for Rovers, as a substitute in a reserve friendly game at home to Rotherham.

A clash that would usually attract a hundred or so spectators saw 5,000 turn up the Keepmoat Stadium. A crowd mostly full of screaming teenage girls ended up finally getting a glimpse of Tomlinson when he stepped off the bench in the 64th minute.

The game ended goalless and acted more as a publicity stunt for Tomlinson and Rovers. It would, unsurprisingly, be his only outing for Doncaster before attentions switched back to music.

Mark Wright

More known for his exploits on The Only Way Is Essex, Wright raised eyebrows when in December 2020 he joined League Two side Crawley. But long before he became a well-known face in reality TV circles, Wright was involved in football as a trainee for Spurs.

He actually spent a spell at Crawley in 2006-07 and 14 years later he returned on a non-contract basis, proving his fitness after an extensive trial period. He made just two appearances second time around, although one was as a late sub in a famous 3-0 FA Cup win over Leeds United in January 2021.

MC Harvey

Another who balanced his music skills with playing football, rapper and former So Solid Crew member Harvey played non-league football for a clutch of teams, most notably AFC Wimbledon.

He was with the Dons during their early days when they were making their way up the non-league circuit following formation after the demise of the old Wimbledon. He also stepped out for Aldershot, Lewes and St Albans City before concentrating on his music.

Gordon Ramsay

The TV chef is best known for his cut-throat insults to budding cooks on a plethora of hit shows. But before he became world famous in the food world, Ramsay was on his way to a career in professional football.

As a teenager he was impressing scouts and was invited for a trial with Glasgow Rangers. But at just 15 he suffered a series of injuries, including damaged knee cartilage. He also tore his cruciate ligament. According to his autobiography, Ramsay played "a couple of non-league matches as a trialist for Rangers." It wasn't long before he gave up pursuing a life on the pitch and it's fair to say he's made a pretty decent living off the back of his culinary skills.

He has been a regular in recent editions of Soccer Aid, the charity football match that pits celebrities and ex-players against each other for a charitable cause.

Nicky Byrne

Westlife star Byrne spent two years with Leeds United after signing for them as a goalkeeper in 1995.

Initially, he was there only for a trial with Alan Maybury and Stephen McPhail, who also came from Ireland. But he impressed with his performance and Leeds then signed him with a two-year contract. He was also a squad member of the FA Cup Youth winning team in 1997 but left when his contract expired later that season.

He has since gone on to become a member of the hugely successful Irish group, who have been active since 1998.
