5 drinks to stay hydrated and glow this winter

The common complaints in winters are dry and dull skin and to add on we forget how important hydration is during winters. Due to the low temperatures we forget to drink water as our thirst responses diminish and thus feel dehydrated. Dehydration can cause a drop in metabolism, feeling sluggish, headaches, fatigue and irregular bowel. Prachi Shah, Clinical Dietitian & Consulting Nutritionist, Founder, Health Habitat shares 5 winter perfect drinks for that glowing skin.

Did you know lack of water in body can also affect your immunity? So, here are few drinks to stay hydrated during winters:

Soups- Warm vegetable soups are comfort foods during winters. They not only provide hydration but are soothing for gut. Have a bowl of home-made vegetable soup before meals.

Green juices- We’ve read a lot about green juices and with tons of recipes available online anyone can easily make it and include it in one’s routine. It helps us meet our daily fluid requirement and also is packed with fibres since Indian diet lacks fibres. Good combination of vegetable, fruit and herbs helps us meet our daily nutrient requirements of certain vitamins and minerals. When our skin health is at a toss, we all question our hydration right? Green juice gives you hydration paced with nutrients to improve your skin health.

Lemonade- Lemonade is quickest beverage prepared at home. Include a glass of lemonade to aid digestion, improve skin health as it is a source of vitamin C and as a way to stay hydrated.

Herbal tea- Warm teas bring joy and make us feel fresh. Different teas give different benefits like you can enjoy green tea during the day or calming chamomile during the night time. In addition to a healthy lifestyle, different herbal teas help us manage different conditions-

Peppermint tea: helps in managing constipation and headaches

Hibiscus: Improves liver health and lowers blood pressure

Ginger: Helps manage indigestion and joint pains

Remember to not go overboard with teas and limit yourself to 2 cups maximum.

Turmeric milk- Also known as ‘golden-milk’ is popular in almost every Indian household. Milk is a rich source of protein and calcium so; in addition to hydration milk provides us with a lot of health benefits. Did you know drinking warm milk before bedtime helps aid sleep. A lot of people add pinch of turmeric for better immunity as turmeric acts as anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory.

Remember all the above drinks will help you achieve your hydration goals but there can never be a replacement for water. One hack is to set a reminder for water. Drink sips of water throughout the day instead of gulping down huge amounts at a go. You can also reduce your caffeine intake in winters as it has the tendency to dehydrate you even further.
