5 dead after small plane crashes near Austin, Texas

A small aircraft has crashed near Austin in Texas, killing all five people on board, according to a county official.

The incident took place on Thursday night in Wimberley, around 40 miles (64 kilometres) south-west of Austin, Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra said in a Facebook post on Friday.

Becerra confirmed the aircraft involved was a Cessna 421C and said early information suggests it was flying at a high speed when it went down at about 11 p.m.

“All five people aboard were killed,” the official said, adding that the identities of the victims have not yet been released as authorities are waiting to inform their families.

He also noted that a second aircraft operating in the same area landed safely near San Antonio.

Becerra said federal agencies have taken charge of the investigation. “The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and will be leading the crash investigation,” he said.
