5 cult Instagram accounts to upgrade your feed

There comes a time in everyone’s online life, where a cull is necessary. If you’re building an all-consuming loathing towards the stream of influencers with wasp-waists in Bali taking over your feed— it’s time to take action.

While we can’t promise you won’t still be bombarded with irritating suggested posts, you can add some characters with razor sharp wit to the mix.

From fashion insiders to pop culture aficionados, hit follow on the below accounts for fresh takes and biting commentary.

1. For your pop culture fix

Evan Ross Katz is not new to the ‘gram, but the past few months have seen him excel. The writer, podcaster, and soon-to-be newsletter sender is a one-stop-shop for all things Hollywood and niche A-lister drama. Recent posts have been a delightful mix of Jennifer Coolidge, Jamie Lee Curtis and Anne Hathaway-related memes mixed with new drops of underwear campaigns (cc. Aaron Taylor-Johnson for Calvin Klein), and unmatched coverage of Gwyneth Paltrow’s “well, we lost half a day of skiing” trial (he even found her “twink attorney’s” songs on Spotify). Always one to go the extra mile, Evan is an addition you won’t regret.

2. For die-hard Londoners

“I make and curate pockets of relatable content,” reads the bio of @socks_house_meeting, the rapidly-spreading account offering satirical takes on London stereotypes. Screenshots of unsuspecting subjects — some you might recognise, others random — are then treated with sprawling captions which rattle off characteristics, sprinkled with colourful adjectives: “litty”, “lettie”, “lengy”, “gorly”, “tappy tap tap” etc. Nonsensical at times, yes, but entertaining nonetheless.

3. For instant fashion news

If you like your fashion updates instantly, @stylenotcom is king. You can count on cobalt blue tiles with block white text bringing you the headlines from the front row constantly. They range from celeb spottings (“REKHA AT DIOR”) to brand activations (“PRADA CAFE IN LONDON”) and coverage of revolving creative director musical chairs (“JEREMY SCOTT OUT FROM MOSCHINO”). It is run by the Georgian Beka Gvishiani, who keeps the tone chirpy with a fashion-is-fun outlook.

4. For the art set

If fashion’s not your shtick, keep up with the in-jokes of the 0.1 per cent gallerists, collectors and interns with @freeze_magazine. A spoof of staple art magazine Frieze, follow for memes that put the knife into the Art Basel aficionados and notoriously left field characters that populate the auction attending crowd.

5. For those in need of a giggle

If “Angela Bassett did the thing” — the lyric performed by Ariana DeBose at the 2023 Bafta Awards (which now boasts its own Wikipedia page) — prompts a song in you, @sainthoax is non-negotiable. Many will already know the pseudonymous account of the Syrian artist and satirist. If you don’t, expect to-the-hour updates on pop culture and political developments, with video memes crafted quickly and with great care. It will have you in stitches.
