49ers to sign veteran DB Logan Ryan

The 49ers are adding some veteran depth in their secondary. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport on Tuesday reported San Francisco is set to sign veteran defensive back Logan Ryan.

Ryan, 32, played cornerback early in his career, but moved to safety over the last three seasons. He spent four years in New England and three with the Titans as a CB before moving to safety in his two years with the Giants and one year with the Buccaneers last year.

It’s unclear whether the 49ers plan to add Ryan to their practice squad or active roster. Sunday in Philadelphia they only had rookie Ji’Ayir Brown and veteran Tashaun Gipson at safety with newly-signed Erik Harris working as a backup and special teams option. It would make sense if Ryan was an addition to the active roster since Talanoa Hufanga and George Odum are both likely out for the season.

Ryan would give San Francisco a veteran defender to take over if one of Gipson or Brown gets hurt.

In 10 seasons Ryan has played in 149 games with 121 starts. He has 742 tackles, 13.0 sacks, 19 interceptions and 98 pass breakups.
