The 49ers secondary is taking another significant hit. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero on Friday reported safety George Odum suffered a torn biceps against the Seahawks on Thanksgiving. The injury will keep him out two-to-four months, which could end his season. A two-month recovery would bring him back in time for a deep playoff run. The team later confirmed the injury.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan after Thursday’s game said the team feared a substantial injury for Odum, but the injury wasn’t confirmed immediately after the game.
Odum has been a special teams stalwart for the 49ers since joining the team last season. He was also their only depth at safety behind Ji’Ayir Brown and Tashaun Gipson. It would be a pretty big surprise if San Francisco didn’t add another safety to the 53-man roster with Talanoa Hufanga already sidelined for the season.
Second-year undrafted free agent Tayler Hawkins is the internal option on the practice squad. They could opt to hit the free agent market as well.
