The 49ers injury situation got a sizable wrench tossed into it Wednesday when head coach Kyle Shanahan announced quarterback Brock Purdy was in concussion protocol.
Adding Purdy to a growing list of injured starters for San Francisco certainly won’t make things easy for the 49ers in their Week 8 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals. The good news is one of the team’s injured stars appears to be trending the right direction.
Here’s a look at Wednesday’s practice participation report:
Did not participate
QB Brock Purdy (concussion)
WR Deebo Samuel (shoulder)
LT Trent Williams (ankle)
Purdy was hurt during Week 7’s loss to Minnesota. Samuel and Williams both missed that game because of injuries they sustained in Week 6’s loss to the Cardinals. The 49ers have already ruled out Samuel for Sunday. Purdy will be at the mercy of concussion protocol and Williams’ status is still to-be-determined. He didn’t practice at all leading up to Week 7 and was listed as ‘doubtful’ for the game before being ruled out when inactives were announced.
Full participation
LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (ankle)
RB Christian McCaffrey (oblique)
It’s a little surprising that McCaffrey is a full go in practice after not practicing in the first two days of Week 7. He played a full complement of snaps in the loss to the Vikings though and his participation Wednesday would indicate he’ll be a full go Sunday barring any setbacks.
Did not participate (non-injury related)
LB Dre Greenlaw
Greenlaw appeared to be battling through something Monday night, but he didn’t have an injury designation on the practice report. He didn’t participate but the team attributed it to rest.
