The 49ers rolled over the Steelers in the season opener at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on Sunday, as San Francisco made a definitive statement that it will be a player once again in the NFC this season.
The 49ers jumped out to a 20–0 lead and never looked back, capturing the victory 30–7 in dominant fashion. The Steelers did not convert a single first down on the first five possessions of the contest. Star San Francisco offensive tackle Trent Williams couldn’t help but throw shade at Pittsburgh when discussing how tired he got during the game.
“At one point, you just kind of wanted [the Steelers] to get a first down,” Williams told the San Francisco Chronicle. “There were all those three-and-outs and we kind of needed a break.”
Seems like a good problem to have for the 49ers, whose defense was so impressive that the offense barely got a break. These are certainly high rent district problems for a team that is looking to make another run to an NFC championship game, and perhaps even one step further to a Super Bowl this year.
The way the season ended at the hands of the Eagles certainly had to leave a bad taste in the mouths of 49ers players, several of whom believe that San Francisco would have made the Super Bowl if quarterback Brock Purdy hadn’t gotten hurt in the conference title game last season.
San Francisco’s season is off to a great start, and the 49ers will look to keep the momentum rolling in Los Angeles against the Rams on Sunday.
