The 49ers may soon be looking for a new offensive coordinator. Mike McDaniel, who was promoted to offensive coordinator with the 49ers last season, interviewed for 10 hours with the Dolphins on Friday according to NFL Media’s Peter Schrager.
McDaniel has long been tied to the Dolphins job and this was presumably his second interview for the club’s head coach opening. Miami is also due to interview Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, per Schrager. Moore has play-calling experience while McDaniel never took on that role.
While his job title changed last year, McDaniel held largely the same responsibilities that he had when he was the team’s run game coordinator. He joined the club in that capacity when the 49ers hired Kyle Shanahan as head coach in 2017.
The 49ers appear to have prepared for his eventual exit by luring former Lions offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn to join their coaching staff as an assistant head coach. His experience designing run games would help fill some of the void left should McDaniel take his first head-coaching job.
