A San Francisco 49ers fan is in a medically induced coma after he was found injured in the parking lot at SoFi Stadium during the NFC Championship Game, according to the Los Angeles Times. Inglewood police are investigating the apparent beating of Daniel Luna, who owns a restaurant in Oakland.
Luna traveled to Inglewood alone to attend the Rams-49ers playoff matchup, a friend of Luna’s family told the LA Times. He was found on the ground by paramedics about a half hour into the game, and was wearing a 49ers jersey. The injuries to his upper body and face were believed to have been suffered from an assault and police are attempting to use video evidence to identify anyone involved in the attack.
“They (medical staff) believe he suffered from an assault at the stadium to his upper body and facial area,” Inglewood Police Lt. Geoffrey Meeks said, via USA TODAY. “We are relying heavily on video to try to identify the people involved. We are going to leave no stone unturned.”
SoFi Stadium issued a statement to USA TODAY Sports saying it is “aware and saddened” by the incident that occurred outside the stadium.
“Our thoughts are with Mr. Luna’s friends and family during this difficult time. We are working with law enforcement officials in their investigation.”
SoFi Stadium will play host to Super Bowl LVI on Feb. 13, with the Rams representing the NFC and the Bengals representing the AFC.
