Outside of the Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams contract sagas, one of the main storylines to come out of the early days of training camp in Santa Clara surrounds third-year quarterback Brock Purdy.
According to multiple reports from practice, the San Francisco 49ers’ signal-caller has struggled with multiple interceptions during the opening days of camp.
On Friday, Kyle Shanahan was asked about Purdy’s interceptions at camp. Despite back-to-back practices with a flurry of interceptions, the 49ers head coach downplayed the issue, stating Purdy doesn’t have an interception problem.
There’s a different story on each play. I know all these stats are made a big deal in practice, and I know that will stick out too. We never want a lot of picks in practice, regardless of who it is. Brock’s never really had an interception problem. He’s protected the ball pretty well in this league for his two years. He also isn’t scared to let it rip either.
If we were really trying to fix that, if he had had a problem, you come out, and that’s all were focusing on and he still has some stats like that. That’s something that concerns you. That’s something I really haven’t been worried about with Brock on. That’s why those stats are also something that hasn’t bothered me at all.

In 21 career starts in the regular season, Purdy has tossed 15 interceptions. Purdy didn’t throw and interception until week six last season. A bulk of Purdy’s interceptions from the 2023-24 season came from a four-interception game in week 15 against the Baltimore Ravens. Purdy’s 11 interceptions ranked outside the top 10 for starters from last season.
Purdy will have another week of training camp to get back on track before the 49ers suit up for their first preseason game against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville on Saturday, August 10.
