45-year-old man shot by two men in front of his wife and son in south east Delhi

NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old man was shot dead by two unidentified men in front of his wife and son in south east Delhi’s Govindpuri on Wednesday night. Police are trying to identify and arrest the assailants. The deceased, Sanjeev Kumar, a resident of Transit Camp in Govindpuri, was a Delhi Transport Corporation employee.

The incident took place around 9pm. Police were informed by a hospital that a man had been admitted with a gunshot injury. A team reached there and met the man’s wife, Geeta (37).

“The woman said that Sanjeev, their eight-year-old son and she were returning home on their bike after buying food from the market. When they reached near a school, two men came on a bike from behind and opened fire on them. One of the bullets hit her husband on the right shoulder and they fell off the bike. The bikers fled the spot, while the woman rushed her husband to the hospital with the help of passersby. The man was declared brought dead,” said a senior police officer.

The officer added, “Geeta said that a few days ago, the man was given a death threat by someone. When she asked him about it, he told her not to worry. The wife suspects this threat may have something to do with the murder.”

DCP (South East) Esha Pandey said a case of murder under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code was registered and further investigation was under way. “We are probing the murder from all angles. CCTV footage is being obtained and examined. Efforts are being made to identify and arrest the accused. Th exact reason behind the murder will only be known after the accused are arrested,” she added.

Sources claimed the man may have been killed due to gambling debts.
