4-year-old dies after adult falls on her in skiing incident

A 4-year-old girl who was injured after an adult fell on top of her while cross-country skiing in Quebec has died, police said.

The little girl was being pulled in a sled by an adult who was skiing at Nakkertok in Val-des-Monts, a popular private cross-country ski club, when she was injured on February 22, the CBC reported.

They were going down a hill when the incident occurred, MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais police said.

Paramedics and firefighters were performing CPR on the girl when the police arrived.

She was first taken to a hospital about nine miles away in Wakefield, before eventually getting transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa, according to the report.

Ontario’s coroner is investigating the death, since she died in a hospital in Ottawa, police said Monday.

At the time of the accident, police spokesperson Martin Fournel told Radio-Canada that foul play was not suspected, and that it appeared to have been an accident.

Authorities have not publicly identified the girl or adult involved in the incident. It was not immediately clear if the adult involved was the girl’s parent or guardian.

Nakkertok, the ski club, reopened on February 23 following the incident, the CBC previously reported.

The tragedy came about two weeks after a 13-year-old girl was killed when her clothing got caught on a chairlift while she was downhill skiing at a nearby resort.

The girl was on a class trip to the Centre Vorlage resort, also located near Wakefield, on February 11, and was about to dismount the chairlift when her clothing became stuck in the machinery, according to the CBC.

Adults tried to free her, but had to bring the chair back to the bottom of the hill to reach her. By the time she arrived, she was not breathing, Quebec police said.

First responders performed CPR and the girl was rushed to the hospital in Wakefield before she was transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

However, several days after the incident, the girl died from her injuries.

In a statement, her family said they were “devastated.”

“We would like to thank our community for their support and the outpouring of love we have received over the last few days. We would like to extend our love to all of those affected by this terrible tragedy,” the family said.

“We are also grateful for everyone who took heroic action to help save our previous child,” they added.

The girl’s identity has not been shared by authorities. Police and the Ontario coroner are also investigating.

“The goal is to know exactly what happened that day,” Fournel, the police spokesperson, said. “All our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this moment.”
