Big news out of Pittsburgh this week as the Steelers have announced they are firing former offensive coordinator Matt Canada. The team is already shuffling personnel and getting things in order for this week but let’s talk about what this move means for the Steelers now and going forward.
A fresh start for Kenny Pickett
Making QBs coach Mike Sullivan is a great move for Kenny Pickett. Not as great as firing Canada but a close second. This will not only give Pickett an opportunity to work with a guy he has a close connection with but will give the team half of a season to evaluate Pickett for the future.
Win or lose this is an improvement
This move doesn’t mean the Steelers offense suddenly starts racking up huge yards and points. But whether or not the offense becomes significantly better over these next eight weeks, getting Canada off the team is an improvement and gives fans and the team hope that the franchise is willing to make radical changes to improve.
The search is on
We will dive into plenty of potential candidates to replace Canada and by this we mean not currently on the staff. There are some great offensive minds out there who could maximize the potential of this group and the firing of Canada is a sign Pittsburgh is willing to make that move.
It might mean Mike Tomlin is maturing
We don’t know for sure how the team got to this point but we are going to give head coach Mike Tomlin the benefit of the doubt that he made this call and it wasn’t made for him. This is a great sign of growth for Tomlin who tends to be rather set in his ways.
