If TikTokker-turned-popstar Addison Rae’s mega-hit is anything to go by, we’re in for a ‘Diet Pepsi’ Summer. What does this mean to anyone not chronically online? Our beloved soft drinks are having a viral moment.
While the concept of a ‘3pm Diet Coke’ isn’t revolutionary, it’s gained significant traction online recently with the hashtag #dietcoke boasting an impressive 33 million videos on TikTok. The niche hashtag #dietcokebreaks has garnered 14 million views. Albeit silly in tone, the content has proven to be highly relatable and universal for users.
One caption on TikTok read “Waiting for the girls who need to sit alone at 3pm and have an ice cold crispy diet coke to recharge their social battery and regain inner peace”. That particular video received over 400k views. The flooding comment section details resounding agreement.
A user on Instagram commented “As soon as 3pm hits I’m in the fridge looking for my cola only thing getting me through”.
It’s clear the notion has become a source of comfort for people in stressful times or to counteract the dreaded mid-afternoon slump. Interestingly a large portion of content refers to the corporate setting specifically. Which begs the question, is the 3pm Diet Coke the new cigarette break?
Psychotherapist Julie Sweet has partnered with Ninja for the launch of the Thirsti water bottle, to explore the intersection of psychology and drinking habits.
The new Thirsti harnesses ultra-smooth BubbleLock technology to ensure colder and fizzier drinks, for longer. A haven for Diet Coke devotees.
Acknowledging the growing trend, Sweet adds that our attachment styles actually manifest in our everyday habits, like the emotional support water or 3pm Diet Coke.
“Emotional support water bottles and ‘sweet treats’ have become widespread as a means for individuals to cope with their mental wellbeing and emotions. Carrying the water bottle offers an anchoring sense of comfort and stability often for those dealing with stress, depression or anxiety.” says Julie Sweet.
“The Ninja Thirsti and the carbonated drinks it houses, offers moments of micro joy. The bubbly sensation, where the first sip is as good as the last, is not only refreshing and replenishing, but can help mindfully ground your body.” adds Sweet.
Take this as a reminder to hit pause and relish in whatever version of a ‘3pm Diet Coke’ looks like to you.
