39 rescue dogs in Leeds looking for their forever homes this Christmas

There are an estimated one million dogs in the UK waiting for adoption this year. Following the Covid-19 pandemic, organisations such as Dogs Trust and Blue Cross issued advice to those looking to adopt a four-legged friend, reminding people that they are for life.

According to the RSPCA, figures from October 2022 revealed rehoming has dropped eight per cent while animal intake is up 8.4 per cent year-on-year. The charity fears the cost of living crisis means more animals are coming into its care while fewer people are considering taking on a new pet.

Rehoming shelters such as the Dogs Trust in Leeds have a number of animals up for adoption. However, it has to be stressed that adopting a dog is a big commitment but also a rewarding one.

Helping to change a dog's life is a precious thing to do, and there are so many dogs nearby looking for their forever home. Dogs Trust in Leeds, at Woodlands Farm in York Street currently has 39 dogs up for adoption.

We have put together a list of all the dogs currently looking for a home in Leeds, using the Dogs Trust website. We have included some information about each dog, including their breed and what type of home they will require.

Shadrach

Shadrach (Dogs Trust)

Shadrach is a 12-year-old Shar Pei Cross. He is a male dog with ongoing medical care required.

Shadrach is "super snuggly" and was originally found as a stray in a bad state. Dogs Trust has said he has now recovered and is looking for a forever home.

Dogs Trust says: "He'll need his new family to be around all the time initially to settle him in, but in time he should be OK on his own for a few hours if built up gradually. He'll need a fully secure garden to play off lead. He likes a calm and peaceful home so young children will be too much for him, but calmer teenagers should be fine. He'll also need to be the only pet in his home."

Todd

Todd (Dogs Trust)

Todd is a six-year-old Staffordshire Cross who is lots of fun to be around. He will require dedicated and focused adopters who will work with the Dogs Trust training team to gradually transition him into a new home.

Dogs Trust says: "His home will need to be calm and peaceful with minimal visitors and with a secure private garden. He needs a consistent routine so living with children or other pets won't be suitable unfortunately, but in time he will be able to have walking buddies out and about. A keen interest in dog training and the patience to slowly help a dog blossom into their best self would make you a great match for Todd."

Tully

Tully (Dogs Trust)

Tully is a one-year-old German Shepherd who has sadly had to deal with a lot in his short life, leaving him without confidence and being unable to handle certain situations.

Dogs Trust says: "He'll need quite a special home with adopters who won't leave him alone until he's ready. He'll need a secure private garden in a peaceful area, as in typical German Shepherd fashion he is a little noise sensitive. He could potentially share his home with another well-mannered dog pending them getting along well, but no other pets. Due to his need for a calm and predictable life he needs an adult only home with no visiting children."

Alfie

Alfie (Dogs Trust)

Alfie is a two-year-old Border Colli who is super smart. He will require an adult-only home with no other pets and people around quite often.

Dogs Trust says: "He can be worried by new people, but he is easy to introduce. He is timid around other dogs and prefers to avoid them if he can. He will need to be walked in quieter areas where he can fully relax and enjoy his time out and about. He travels well though so won't mind being driven to quieter areas. He'll need a private, secure garden so he has somewhere to play off-lead. He isn't used to being left alone so will need someone around all the time"

Apollo

Apollo (Dogs Trust)

Apollo is an 18-month-old Crossbreed who is looking for patient adopters who will be happy to come and visit him multiple times at the centre before adoption, to build a relationship.

Dogs Trust says: "He has a degenerative condition with his hips so we don't expect him to reach his twilight years, but we believe he'll have a good few years of fun and lots of love to give. Due to his size and medical needs he won't suit a home with children. He's looking for a peaceful adult only home where he can get loads of attention from his family. He enjoys having walking buddies and meeting new dogs out and about so could possibly live with another dog in the home."

Archie

Archie (Dogs Trust)

Archie is a seven-year-old Border Collie who is very intelligent and loves to learn. He is looking for a home with people who will be able to bring out the best in him.

Dogs Trust says: "Like any typical Collie, Archie is rather noise sensitive so needs to live with adults only in a calm household in a peaceful location away from traffic. He'll need his own secure garden to play in. He doesn't enjoy unknown people visiting his home so a home with very few visitors, and none at all during his settling in period is vital. He'll need somebody around all the time to settle him in but in time should be ok to be left for a few hours if built up slowly. Very importantly you'll need to be active and prepared to continue his training at home."

Beau

Beau (Dogs Trust)

Beau is a two-year-old Lurcher who lives for his training. He is looking for a dedicated family who have a real passion for dog training and will work with the Dogs Trust team to bring out the very best in him.

Dogs Trust says: "He can be a strong lad so only kids over 16 would be suitable. He’s working hard on his doggy socialisation, but he isn’t looking to share with any other pets. He can struggle with unfamiliar people so a calm home with few visitors would be ideal. He loves a good zoom off-lead and is very playful, so a secure private garden with a high fence will be required too."

Billy

Billy (Dogs Trust)

Bill is a cheeky Patterdale Terrier, he has a lot of energy and very bubbly. Billy is looking for a family that love the terrier breed.

Dogs Trust says: "He won't be able to be left initially as he doesn't like being alone. You will need to let him settle in at his own pace and slowly look to build his confidence around being left. He is best walked in quieter areas where he won't come across many unfamiliar dogs. A secure garden will be needed as he likes to have somewhere to explore off-lead. Children over 16 years old will be fine if they are confident around playful dogs. Most important is that you will need to be prepared to share the sofa with him as this is where he likes to snuggle with his family."

Blossom

Blossom (Dogs Trust)

Blossom is a one-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier who was originally found as a stray, was rehomed, and returned once already. She is looking for very committed owners.

Dogs Trust says: "She needs to be the only pet in her home and she'll need some help honing her doggie skills. Due to her bouncy nature, and her training requirements, she needs an adult-only home with at least two adults. A secure garden to play in and practice her housetraining will also be needed. She'll need someone around all the time until she's fully settled into her new life, and then her leaving hours can be built up gradually. We believe that Blossom will try to eat any food she can find so she must not have access to any bins."

Bonnie

Bonnie (Dogs Trust)

Bonnie is a four-year-old Crossbreed. She needs an adult only home where she will be the only pet. She likes a quiet and peaceful life.

Dogs Trust say: "She will need someone around all the time during her settling in period. She will also require a secure garden so she has somewhere to play off-lead."

Captain

Captain (Dogs Trust)

Captain is a five-year-old ex-racing Greyhound who is looking for a loving home. He needs a calm home with adults or older teens who like a lazy dog around.

Dogs Trust says: "He must have a secure garden with fence so he has somewhere for his zoomies off-lead. He's no trouble around other dogs, but really isn't interested in them. We wouldn't therefore home him with any other pets as he likes to have all the attention."

Cheeka

Cheeka (Dogs Trust)

Cheeka is an eight-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross. She has a broken heart after losing her owner and her home.

Dogs Trust say: "Cheeka is a real snuggle monster and adores relaxing on the sofa with her favorite humans. She isn't fussy though and will happily make a big fuss of everyone she meets. She is happier in familiar places and her true personality shines through so a good routine and a less adventerous owner who is around all the time would suit her fine."

Cleo

Cleo (Dogs Trust)

Cleo is a two to five-year-old Crossbreed who is looking for adopters with a private garden and secure fencing. She can bark quite a bit when she sees other dogs and prefers to walk in quiet areas.

Dogs Trust says: "She's a real livewire so young children won't suit her, but kids over 12 who enjoy being around bubbly, playful dogs will be fine. She is a super smart cookie and picks up training very quickly so we'd love to find her a home with people who are as passionate about her training as she's so much fun."

Dave (Oscar)

Dave (Oscar) (Dogs Trust)

Dave is a five-year-old Labrador looking for a home with an enclosed garden. He can only go for short walks due to an ongoing issue with his legs.

Dogs Trust says: "He could live with a calm dog and has previously lived with cats. He can live with children 10 years and older, but will happily spend time with visiting children who are younger. He would like his new owners to be around initially but then should be able to be built up to a few hours."

Domino

Domino (Dogs Trust)

Domino is an eight-year-old Lurcher who is fun and clever and will require an adopter with a keen interest in dog training. He needs owners who are switched on and will work with Dogs Trust to help him transition into a new home.

Dogs Trust: "This will involve multiple meets at the centre followed by home visits, but our team will be with you every step of the way. He won't be able to be alone initially and will need be very slowly introduced to the idea of being left. He needs to be the only pet in an adult only home (with no visiting children) and a secure, private garden with at least 6ft fence."

Edie

Edie (Dogs Trust)

Edie is a Shar Pei Cross, aged three. She is worried by unfamiliar people but is the sweetest and most playful girl once she knows a person.

Dogs Trust says: "We are looking for a super special home for Edie due to her nervous character. Her home needs to be a calm and predictable environment with adults only and no visiting children. Very few visitors in general as she struggles with unknown people. She is worried by other dogs too so cannot share with any other pets. She will need you to be around all the time initially, not for constant attention as she likes to chill most of the time, but she just likes to know you're there. "

Ella and Nelly

Ella and Nelly (Dogs Trust)

Nelly and her best friend Ella have a close bond and would like to find a home together. They are around five to six years old and a little reserved to start. They are both Beagle Cross.

Dogs Trust says: "Nelly and Ella will need an enclosed garden for house training and a safe place to get to know their new owners. They are active dogs and once settled in will love long walks with their new family (children 14 and over who appreciate that this pair may need their own space initially)."

Foggy

Foggy (Dogs Trust)

Foggy is a five to seven-year-old Lurcher Cross who will need owners around to settle him for a few weeks. He can live with children over 14-years-old.

Dogs Trust says: "He has been through a lot of change recently. Once settled he should be ok left for a couple of hours. Foggy will need to be the only dog in the home as he can be too OTT off lead however, he can have walking friends."

Harlow

Harlow (Dogs Trust)

Harlow is a three-year-old Border Collie. He needs adopters who must research and understand the Border Collie breed.

Dogs Trust says: "He will need patient and resilient adopters who are in it for the long haul. The key to opening his true personality is space, time, and patience, so by committing to multiple visits you'll actually help him build his trust in you much sooner. You'll need to be a true Collie lover who fully understands their breed traits and can offer an environment which will complement these. He needs a calm and predictable home with adults only and no other pets."

Harold

Harold (Dogs Trust)

Harold is a four-year-old Lurcher. He is looking for an active family who will enjoy lots of fun training and plenty of snuggles.

Dogs Trust says: "You'll need to visit him a few times at the centre to build a proper bond but once he's comfortable there's no stopping his friendly and playful approach to life. He’ll need a secure garden to play off lead and he’ll be fine with kids over 16 who will enjoy having an active and loving dog around."

Hugo and Harvey

Hugo (Dogs Trust)
Harvey (Dogs Trust)

Hugo and Harvey have lived together their whole lives. They are looking for a home to retire in together.

Dogs Trust say: "They can be a little shy when they first meet you, but once you’re part of their gang, they are very loving and affectionate and Hugo especially loves to curl up on your knee. They do not require much exercise but would love a private, secure garden to explore. Hugo and Harvey can be left for short periods if this is built up gradually. Due to their shy nature, they would prefer to live with children over 12 years old."

Jake

Jake (Dogs Trust)

Jake is an eight-year-old Lurcher who loves to have humans around all the time. He will need time to settle in before building up any alone time.

Dogs Trust says: "He’s a sensitive soul who is easily unsettled by noise so needs a calm and quiet home in a peaceful area. He is worried by other dogs and unfamiliar people, so his home must be adult only with no visiting children and few visitors generally and he’ll need to be the only pet."

Jessie

Jessie (Dogs Trust)

Jessie is a nine-month-old Border Collie, she is very energetic and lively. She will need owners who can keep up with her.

Dogs Trust says: "Jessie does show some typical breed traits, she can be very over the top with other dogs and has on occasion chased traffic so will need owners who are passionate about dog training – our training team here at the centre will be happy to assist with this. Jessie would need to live in a quiet area where she can fully relax when out and about and she can sometimes be vocal in the car so local dog walking routes would be beneficial."

Larry

Larry (Dogs Trust)

Larry is a four-year-old Bichon Frise. He will need time to get used to new people and require patient adopters.

Dogs Trust says: "He doesn't enjoy being around children, so he needs an adult only home, in a peaceful area. Although he can make some walking buddies out and about, he doesn't like to share his home so needs to be the only pet. Larry does have a sensitive tummy so will need to be fed on a special diet which our vet will discuss in more detail."

Lexi

Lexi (Dogs Trust)

Lexi is a two to five-year-old Boxer Cross who will need to be an only dog for now as she can get worried by others. She can however go for walks with other doggy friends.

Dogs Trust says: "She'll be fine with teenage children and once she is settled, she can be left for a few hours. Lexi has a skin condition which will require ongoing medication. Our vet team will discuss this in more detail with potential adopters."

Louise

Louise (Dogs Trust)

Louise is a one to two-year-old Crossbreed who will need to be the only pet in the home with no neighbouring dogs to worry her. She will require a private garden or regular access to a quiet area.

Dogs Trust says: "Louise’s owners will need to be able to continue her training to build up her confidence around other dogs so she can interact better with dogs on her walks in the future. Louise will require up to five visits at the rehoming centre before she goes home, so she can get to know her new family."

Luna

Luna (Dogs Trust)

Luna is a six-month Beagle Cross breed looking for a very special forever home. Unfortunately Luna suffered a lot of upheaval in her young life.

Dogs Trust says: "She will need a calm and predictable home with dedicated adopters who are happy to take on a few training challenges and continue the great progress that she has made since arriving with us. We are looking for a home for Luna with another, confident doggy friend that can act as a role model for her."

Max

Max (Dogs Trust)

Max is a very handsome six-year-old Dalmatian who was born deaf so is looking for a very specific home.

Dogs Trust says: "He is a lovely, friendly boy with the people he knows but can get quite overwhelmed by strangers so needs a quiet adult only home with few visitors. Max is not good at sharing and can be protective around his food and other items so this needs to be managed carefully in his new home."

Meg and Mollie

Meg and Mollie (Dogs Trust)

Meg and Mollie are both 10 year-old Cockerpoos looking for a very special home together. Their home needs to be a very calm and peaceful environment, which means they can't live with any other pets or children.

Dogs Trust says: "They're both very shy and will need time and patience to let them come out of their shell in their own time. A secure garden will be needed for them to explore outdoors, as it will be some time before they'll be ready to go out for walks on lead."

Mila

Mila (Dogs Trust)

Mila is a beautiful five-year-old Staffy Cross who forms a strong bond with her human friends and once she knows you, will shower you in affection. Mila needs patient and dedicated adopters who will be happy to take time getting to know her.

Dogs Trust says: "You'll need to be confident around strong dogs as she often forgets her own strength. She needs quite a specific home which is not open plan with adults only and no other pets. She won't be able to live next door to another dog and must have her own secure garden with at least 5ft fencing."

Oscar

Oscar (Dogs Trust)

Oscar is a two-year-old Crossbreed who has a lot of potential if adopted by the right owner. He is looking to be the only pet in an adult only home with no visiting children.

Dogs Trust says: "Having someone around for most of the day initially would be best due to his lengthy stay in kennel. Due to Oscars over-excitedness he isn't to greet visitors at the front door, however, he is instantly friendly with people he meets. He is a real brain box and loves to learn new things."

Poppy

Poppy (Dogs Trust)

Poppy is a seven-year-old Patterdale Terrier Cross, she is still full of energy and loves to go for walks. She is a friendly girl who likes a gentle fuss.

Dogs Trust says: "Poppy is fine seeing dogs out and about, but she would prefer to be the only dog in the home. Poppy has shown signs of separation anxiety and will cry and bark when left, even for very short periods, so she will need her new owners around all the time for a long settling in period."

Purdy

Purdy (Dogs Trust)

Purdy is a seven-year-old Crossbreed who loves human attention. She enjoys playing off her lead in a fully secure, private garden.

Dogs Trust says: "Due to her size and exuberance, she won't suit very young children, but confident teens should be fine. She doesn't want to share her home with any other pets and will need to live in a calm, peaceful environment where she can develop a good routine."

Reggie

Reggie (Dogs Trust)

Reggie is a playful one-year-old Lurcher. He is looking for an active family who will take him on lots of walks.

Dogs Trust says: "He is fine around other dogs but he will settle best as the only pet for now. He's quite a big, leggy boy so young kids won't suit him but confident over 14's should be fine. He has a history of being housetrained but may need a little refresher as he settles. He'll need someone around all the time until he's fully settled into his new home and routine."

Rocket

Rocket (Dogs Trust)

Rocket is a six-year-old Shar Pei Cross Vizsla who is looking for a very special family who will take time to work with Dogs Trust to prepare him for his new home. He is quite anxious and will need an adult only home.

Dogs Trust says: "He'll need somebody around all the time and will need to be slowly introduced to the idea of being left alone. He won't be able to share his home with any other pets unfortunately. He also has a skin condition which will require ongoing medication. Our Vet will discuss this in more detail with potential adopters."

Rosco

Rosco is an older boy, he is an eight-year-old plus Bulldog who has a skin allergy and requires pain medication. He will need an owner who can support this.

Dogs Trust says: "Rosco doesn’t like stairs so he needs either a single-storey home or a house where he can access everything he needs on one floor. Adult only home / children over 14 as at his age, Rosco needs his quiet time. Must be the only dog in the home. Knowledge of the Bulldog breed would be preferable."

Santa's Little Helper

Santa's Little Helper (Dogs Trust)

Scamp

Scamp (Dogs Trust)

Scamp is a seven-year-old Shih Tzu who is waiting for his forever home. He has been waiting a while and he needs to have the right home.

Dogs Trust says: "He must have a calm, predictable home with adults only and no visiting children at all. This is because he has shown in the past that he is not comfortable around kids so we cannot put him in that position. His adopters must be willing to work with our training team to slowly get to know him through multiple visits both here at the centre and eventually with home visits too. He won't be able to share his home with any other pets, although he is manageable out and about with other dogs as long as they don't get right in his face. "

Sebastian

Sebastian (Dogs Trust)

Sebastian is a five-year-old Bulldog who is adorable and always happy to see other people. He is not suitable for families with young children.

Dogs Trust says: "Sebastian has lots of energy so an enclosed garden is a must. He will need active owners and although he has a problem with one of his knee caps (which our vet will discuss in more detail) he does like his walks."
