34 North East areas still seeing a rise in Covid cases as restrictions are relaxed

Coronavirus cases have fallen across the North East - but there are still some areas that are still seeing an increase.

Despite a high number of cases, every authority in the North East has seen a drop including Sunderland which has seen the biggest reduction of all with a drop of 30.3%.

However, 34 areas across the region are still seeing sharp increases including Belmont and Carrville which has seen a 40.7% hike in cases.

Also experiencing high increases are Haydon Bridge and Allendale with 36.7% and College and Park West with 32.8%.

It comes after Plan B restrictions were lifted in England on January 27, with face coverings no longer a legal requirement in public spaces or on public transport.

People living in care homes welcomed changing Covid rules that mean they can have as many visitors as they want - but they've also slammed the "hypocrisy" of Government figures.

A redacted version of Sue Gray's report into the string of lockdown-flouting gatherings held at No 10 identified a "serious failure" to observe the high standards expected of those working at the heart of Government.

Last Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police confirmed it has launched a criminal investigation into the alleged parties which appeared to break Covid-19 rules during the pandemic.
