30,000 tonnes of bathroom waste goes to landfill as 42% don't recycle

A new study reveals that people aren’t recycling their bathroom waste, meaning over 30,000 tonnes of bathroom items are continuing to end up in landfill each year. The research by homeware brand Brabantia found that although 71% of people always recycle in their kitchen only 58% do so in the bathroom - with the main reason being that they are unclear as to what is recyclable and what is not.

What’s more, over a fifth stated it doesn’t even cross their minds to separate bathroom waste, and a quarter of people don’t have the space for a bathroom bin.

The research comes as Brabantia launches a new compact range of its iconic Bo Bins. The new designs and sizes allow Brits to manage waste in every room, regardless of size.

Brabantia’s Charlie Thomas said: “Our research highlights that much more can be done to make sure we are recycling consistently across our home, and our bathroom is no exception. This doesn’t have to mean big changes; the little things really do count.

“It’s about making small changes to our routine and can be as simple as putting a bin in a space which doesn’t currently have one. I’m sure we can all agree, that a tidy house is a tidy mind, so now is the time to form small habits that can have a lasting impact on ourselves and our planet.”

Brabantia and expert home organiser Vicky Silverthron have come together to help the nation tackle at home recycling and organising in a manageable way. Vicky said: “It’s amazing how even the most committed recyclers forget one important area of the home. The bathroom! With small behaviour changes and simple additions to this room, I believe we can up our eco and change our ways.”
