The Golden State Warriors are widely expected to make a trade ahead of the February 8 deadline. Steve Kerr‘s team has stuttered throughout the season’s first half, currently sitting 12th in the Western Conference with an 18-21 record. As such, there have been multiple rumors making their way around the news cycle surrounding potential trades that could take place.
The Warriors have multiple trade assets at their disposal. Mike Dunleavy Jr. could decide to dangle some of the younger talent on the roster in a potential trade for a ready-made upgrade from a team that’s looking to re-tool or rebuild. Or, he could look to move on a proven veteran in a bigger deal that also restructures some of the cap sheet.
Whatever Dunleavy decides to do, it will likely have an effect on how the second half of the season will unfold. However, before dreaming of who could be heading to the Bay Area, it’s wise to take stock of whose time with the Warriors could be nearing an end.
Andrew Wiggins
Andrew Wiggins, 28, hasn’t reached his usual lofty standards over the first half of the season. A huge part of the Warriors run to the 2022 NBA championship, there was hope that he could continue emerging as one of Golden State’s best players. However, a return of 11.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists on 41.8% shooting and 29.5% from 3-point range in an average of 26.2 minutes per game has left his spot on the roster looking tenuous.
Wiggins is in the first year of a four-year $109 million contract. That sort of security could entice a team to try and get the best out of Wiggins in a new situation.
Jonathan Kuminga
Jonathan Kuminga made headlines when a member of his camp reportedly noted how the third-year forward had “lost faith” in Kerr. The explosive young talent has been impressive this season and has deputized for Draymond Green during his suspension. However, if Dunleavy Jr. has his eyes set on a potential star addition, Kuminga could be used as a makeweight in a deal.
Moses Moody
Moses Moody often feels like the odd man out when it comes to the younger talent on the Warriors roster. With the addition of Brandin Podziemski, Moody has found a consistent role difficult to come by this season. Still, he has huge upside as a potential star of the future and could be used as an anchor in a trade with a team looking to build around youth and potential.
