3 Powerful Hanuman Chalisa Lessons for Strength & Karma Yoga

Tulsidas, one of the greatest poets in the world, wrote Hanuman Chalisa in 16th century. It is a hymn consisting of forty-verses in Awadhi language. Tulsidas wrote this great hymn, praising qualities such as strength, courage, wisdom, devotion to Rama and so forth of Hanuman Jhi, so as ensure that these qualities will get reflected in the hearts of sincere devotees. In fact, Hanuman Chalisa is written in such a way that anyone in this world, whether he or she is a farmer, soldier or householder, can memorise and chant it daily. In this article, we will explore some of the most important life lessons that we can learn from this powerful hymn of utmost spiritual and psychological importance.

1. Strength Comes From Humility and Devotion

Hanuman Jhi

In today’s world, numerous individuals believe that strength comes from pride and personal glory. However, when we look at such a towering figure as Hanuman Jhi, we see that his strength stems from humility and his boundless devotion to Lord Rama. Every mighty action that he carries out, whether it is the leaps across ocean, fights with demons or lifting of mountains, stems from his selfless service to Lord Rama.

He is always moved by this great purpose. Lord Hanuman has no intention to attain the approval of others or to show off his power. His actions flow from deep humility and devotion. That is, the Lord has dedicated his entire life to fulfil the purpose of selfless service to Bhagwan Rama. As long as this, fire is blazing within Hanuman Jhi’s soul, nothing in this world can stop him. So, by internalising this very important lesson from the Lord, we can orient our lives entirely in service to our duties. Don’t waste your precious energy thinking about any kinds of worldly distractions. Work selflessly. Act kindly. Harmony and strength will prevail in your life.

2. Fear and Doubt Becomes Nothing When Duty is Clear

Throughout Chalisa, we see Mahakavi Tulsidas describing the heroic actions of Lord Hanuman. The Lord burns cities in his pursuit of justice, fights through enemy territories by himself and stands unmoved even in the face of death. This endless courage stems from which corner of Bhagwan's soul?

The single most important reason is the clarity that Hanuman jhi has about his duty. Today’s psychological research tells us that those who have a clear “why” to live for can bear with any “how.” In other words, if you have deep-rooted faith and understanding about the meaning of your actions, you will become unstoppable. For Lord Hanuman, the meaning of his existence was rooted almost entirely on his absolute devotion or Bhakti to Lord Rama. He didn’t lose his focus from the thought of helping Rama in rescuing Sita and also in destroying evil, even for a single second. Therefore, doubt or confusion, never entered his soul.

3. Karma Yoga in the Actions of Lord Hanuman

There is another key reason behind the fearlessness and extreme power of Lord Hanuman. That is, the Lord's detachment from the outcomes of his actions. For Hanuman Jhi, fulfilling his duty is the only aim. The Lord knows that wasting even a single moment in worrying about the fruits of his action can distract him from his purpose. Hence, he is always peaceful and balanced. No cravings. No aversions. No fear.

We must realise that this is the path towards attaining total freedom from attachments to worldly matters. Lord Krishna himself encouraged us to engage in this path of Karma Yoga, when Bhagwan said in Bhagavad Gita: “You have a right to perform your duty, but not to the fruits of your actions.”
