3 of the best Disney+ movies to stream in December 2025, including an 80s sci-fi classic

Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch embrace each other while standing on a beach.

Curious about which new Disney+ movies have been added? The streaming service has gone all out, and I was impressed by everything new on Disney+ in December this year.

Only one of my big recommendations is one of 2025's new movies, but the other two are classics that shouldn't be missed. There's something for everyone here whether you're in the mood for sci-fi, a family adventure or a black comedy.

Here are my three best movie picks for what to watch on Disney+ in December.

Back to the Future

RT score: 93%
Runtime: 116 minutes
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Age Rating: PG
Cast: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover

All three Back to the Future movies are now streaming on Disney+ but if you watch any of them, don't miss the first. The iconic 80s sci-fi movie shouldn't be missed, and it's one that really holds up no matter how many times you rewatch it.

If you haven't seen it, Zemeckis' much-loved movie follows Marty McFly, a teenager who is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean built by scientist Emmett 'Doc' Brown. There, he inadvertently prevents his future parents from falling in love, so is forced to reconcile them to somehow return back to his present timeline.

It's quotable, heartfelt and laugh out loud funny, so I highly recommend it.

The Roses

RT score: 64%
Runtime: 105 minutes
Director: Tony McNamara
Age Rating: R
Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou

The Roses is my most recent recommendation. Following on from its 2025 theatrical release, you can now watch it in the comfort of your own home. With a star-studded cast and a great story, it's well worth checking out.

Despite its mixed Rotten Tomatoes score of 64% from the critics, this tale of a picture perfect marriage that falls apart wasn't loved by everyone. But I had a great time with it and I think fans of a good satire or relationship drama will too.

If you liked this, why not check out the original 1989 movie it was based on too? The War of the Roses is streaming on Hulu.

Shrek

RT score: 88%
Runtime: 90 minutes
Directors: Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson
Age Rating: PG
Cast: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow

I just had to include Shrek. The Dreamworks classic is on Disney+, so if you've been meaning to revisit Duloc, now's your chance.

Poking fun at fairytales and fantasy stories, the titular Shrek is irritated when his swamp is overrun by creatures that have been banished by Lord Farquaad. He teams up with a talking donkey to rescue Princess Fiona from a tower, so she can marry Farquaad in exchange for Shrek getting his swamp back.

It also has an excellent soundtrack, but I'm sure you knew that already.
