1. Add a Kitchen Cart For Styling and Extra Surface Space
One of the best ways to increase your usable countertop space without any major works is to introduce a kitchen cart. 'Pull your butcher's block to the end of your table for big gatherings where you need extra countertop space to lay out your platters or to the cooker when you are making jams and marmalades.'

2. Use a Sink or Stove Cover to Extend Your Surfaces
In small kitchens, you need to get smarter about extending your counter space, especially if you don't have room for a portable cart. Instead, look to features like a sink and cooktop that don't need to be usable at all times, and how you can make those areas work harder.
One of the most impactful ways to extend your counter space here is to use stove or sink covers. 'A fitted or oversized cutting board that sits over your sink (or even a cool, unused cooktop) gives you a temporary work surface exactly where you need it. It’s especially helpful in smaller kitchens where prep space is limited,' says Danielle.
'This effectively turns dead zones into usable prep areas and can make a tight kitchen feel twice as efficient during cooking. It also keeps everything centralized, so you’re not constantly moving around to find space.' You can buy ready-made covers, or if you are in the renovation phase, ask your contractor to save the countertop cuts, especially the one for the sink, as it will be perfectly sized.

3. Edit Down Your Appliances

'Most kitchens feel visually chaotic because the storage elsewhere isn't working. Fix the storage, and the surfaces tend to follow. It's also worth thinking about what you could replace,' says Simon Mayhew, Founder and Interior Designer at TXTURED.
But for those essential small appliances, consider if they can be moved to take up less counter space, or swapped for a smaller alternative. This also applies to the accessories, like coffee pod holders. Switching your kettle for a hot water tap is one option that is easier to implement than you might think.
'A hot water tap, for instance, eliminates the kettle, one of the bulkiest and most permanent fixtures on most countertops. Small changes like that can make a surprising difference to how spacious a kitchen feels.' Also consider dual-function appliances – some air fryers eliminate the need for a toaster, for example.
