26/11 survivor moves Bombay HC for allotment of house

MUMBAI: A survivor of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks has moved the Bombay High Court to direct the state government to allot her a house.

A bench led by Justice Sanjay Gangapurwala on Thursday heard a petition by Devika Rotawan who was nine years old when she was shot in her leg at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus on November 26, 2008. She was bedridden for six months. During the trial, she had identified Ajmal Kasab, the lone 26/11 gunman who was caught alive.

Devika had earlier moved the High Court in August 2020 stating that Rs 13.26 lakh compensation paid by the state was spent on her medical treatment. She had urged allotment of a house under the economically weaker section quota. In October 2020, the High Court directed the state to consider her representation for housing.

As it was not decided, Devika recently moved the HC saying her family is unable to pay rent for the room they live in and that they will soon be homeless. The High Court bench posted the next hearing on October 12 after none appeared for her. tnn
