It's been seven years since the last Devil May Cry game was released, and 25 years since legendary developer Hideki Kamiya was at the helm of the series. Kamiya moved onto other projects after directing the original DMC, but he's now teasing fans on social media with the possibility of a return to the series – an idea that's all the more tantalizing given his recent reunion with Capcom.
Over the weekend, a fan asked Kamiya on social media about some deep cut lore in the original Devil May Cry. What's up with the dragon Dante transforms into during the game's final boss fight? "Is it the same as Vergil creating swords with his aura or is it a familiar?" YokkelTV asks. "Something else? Can you elaborate on this, please?"
"That will become clear when I make another game in the DMC series," Kamiya responds (translated via DeepL).
So is that a Kamiya-led Devil May Cry 6 confirmed? Well, not quite. Kamiya is infamous among fans for being a bit of a troll on social media, acting as the game industry's most lovable asshole on Twitter. Maybe he does have some desire to return to the Devil May Cry series and answer these kinds of questions, but it's equally possible that this is just an obtuse way of saying "the question will never be answered."
But it's impossible to ignore the fact that, suddenly, Kamiya's return to the Devil May Cry series actually feels like a possibility. He departed the company after the launch of Okami in 2006 and soon co-founded PlatinumGames, where he led titles like Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101. And, in turn, he left PlatinumGames in 2023 to found a studio called Clovers, which would soon partner with Capcom on an as-yet-untitled Okami sequel.
It's worth noting that Kamiya previously joined forces with Ikumi Nakamura in 2019 to tease a possible Okami sequel on social media, years before Clovers and the Capcom collaboration became real. Maybe he's once again testing the waters for an actual new game by getting fans fired up on Twitter. And hey, Capcom's gotta follow up on the recent hype around Devil May Cry somehow, right?
