A 25-year-old woman was shot dead and six other people wounded in Chicago on Sunday morning, police say.
Police said a "large group of people" had gathered in the Austin neighbourhood on Saturday night to mark four years since a man's death in a car crash.
A 'verbal altercation' broke out among the group at around 1am then multiple people opened fire.
CPD Deputy Chief Adnardo Gutierrez said there may have been more than one shooter - and a 29-year-old man shot in the chest and arm remains in critical condition
A 25-year-old woman was discovered by officers lying on the ground unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
A 17-year-old girl was shot in the leg and taken to West Suburban Hospital, where she remains in good condition.
Three men, ages 27, 28 and 29, and a 28-year-old woman attended hospital in good condition, police have said.
The 29-year-old man in critical condition has been transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said.
According to authorities, the argument that lead to the shooting broke out amongst people at the event.
Detectives say they are investigating but no one is in custody yet.
A police spokesman said officers were at the scene of the shooting "within minutes".
"They were out there celebrating and then something happened and a verbal altercation occurred and somebody began shooting, or multiple people began shooting," Gutierrez said at a 8am briefing on Sunday.
He said it's still under investigation how many people opened fire, but he said the gunshots were fired by a person or persons who were taking part in the remembrance.
Gutierrez said a witness told officers an altercation occurred before the shooting, which happened as the group was in a street in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago's West Side.
Gutierrez added detectives are still working to find and interview witnesses as he urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact police and pass that information along.
