24 Hours in A&E: Woman, 20, concerns medics with memory loss after motorcycle crash

As 24 Hours in A&E continued on Tuesday, January 24, paramedics were called to help a 20-year-old woman who'd been badly injured after being knocked unconscious in a motorcycle crash. The fourth episode of the new Channel 4 series, which was called ‘The Unforeseen’, saw doctors concerned by the injuries sustained by the young woman, who was called Peta and had Asperger’s syndrome and ADHD.

Upon arriving at the Accident & Emergency Department at Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) in Nottingham with her mother, Peta displayed several unusual symptoms. She had a left-side head injury and also, pains in her neck and pelvis.

Registar Amanjeet was more concerned, however, by the confusion exhibited by Peta and immediately sent her for an emergency head CT scan. He thought she may have a bleed on the brain after he asked her what year it was, to which she said: “2001”. Amongst other things, this series also saw the team at QMC deal with a young footballer who'd had a cardiac arrest. Read more about that here.

Peta’s head CT scan revealed that she had a scalp haematoma, which is bleeding from a blood vessel between the scalp and the skull. “It can be innocuous but it can also be a pointer that there is a bleed in the brain or on the brain,” said Amanjeet, who kept her in hospital for further neurological tests. An x-ray also showed that Peta had snapped her collar bone in the crash.

A title card at the end of the episode said that Peta spent two nights on the ward before returning home. She is now back on her motorcycle after sustaining no long-term injuries. 24 Hours in A&E airs on Tuesdays on Channel 4 at 9pm. For more TV and showbiz stories, subscribe to our newsletter here.
