2024 US Presidential Election Live Blog: Donald Trump Vs Kamala Harris

us-election-live-blog-lead

The 2024 United States presidential election is ON! Democrat nominee and sitting Vice President Kamala Harris is facing off against Republican nominee and former US President Donald Trump in a neck-and-neck race.

While we might not know the results for several days, we’ll keep you updated throughout Election Day and beyond.

Remember: the key swing states to keep an eye out for are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. If North Carolina goes Kamala’s way, we’re probably looking at a Democrat win. However, if New Hampshire — which is not a swing state — is a landslide for Trump, then that’s an indication he’ll be returning to the White House.

Buckle up. It’s going to be a long day.

FYI: the following dates and times are in AEDT. While the election is Tuesday, November 5 for Americans, Australians will be seeing the results on Wednesday, November 6.

5.00pm — Trump has won over Georgia, another key swing state

In a recent AP Race Call, it has reported that Trump has won the state of Georgia. This is the second key swing state to have been called, with Trump winning North Carolina earlier today.

Georgia also becomes the first state to flip from its 2020 election results.

4.57pm — Harris to not address the public following today’s early results

The Guardian has reported that the Vice President will not be making a speech following tonight’s early results.

“We still have votes to count. We still have states that have not been called yet. We will continue, overnight, to fight to make sure that every vote is counted, that every voice has spoken. So you won’t hear from the vice president tonight, but you will hear from her tomorrow,” Harris’ campaign co-char Cedric Richmond shared.

Harris’ election party at Howard University has also seen a mood shift, with aides reportedly telling camera crews to shut their lights.

Beyoncé‘s “Freedom” — a power anthem used in Harris’ campaign — was also cut after a few seconds.

4.49pm — Harris Headquarters sees a ‘yuge mood shift

Shortly after Trump won North Carolina — one of the seven key swing states — Lauren Gambino of The Guardian reported that “the mood has certainly shifted” at Harris Headquarters.

According to the journalist, supporters are seen frantically refreshing their phones. After Trump was called for North Carolina, boos erupted from the crowd alongside “a wave of sighs”.

4.25pm — Moo Deng might’ve predicted the US election results

Earlier in the week, beloved internet star Moo Deng shocked the world after she predicted that Donald Trump would win the 2024 election.

Welp, it looks like her crystal ball could be legit. It’s still early hours, but I think we’re all a bit stressy.

Another one for good measure:

4.01pm — ALOOOOHAAAA, Harris nabs Hawaii

In AP’s latest Race Call, the Vice President managed to win over Hawaii. As per the publication, Hawaii is a blue state, therefore Harris’ victory was expected.

3.46pm — Harris wins in Virginia

As per AP, Harris has nabbed victory in Virginia. Trump has failed to win over the state in both 2016 in 2020.

3.38pm — Harris also sees victory in New Mexico

Following a Race Call update from AP, it also reported that Harris nabbed victory in New Mexico.

3.27pm — Harris wins over Oregon

While Trump managed to win over one of the first key swing states, Harris saw victory in Oregon. This comes as no surprise as per the AP, the state has voted for the Democratic nominee for president since 1988.

3.19pm — Trump wins North Carolina

As per the AP Race Call, the former US President has managed to win over North Carolina. The state is one of seven key swing states alongside Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Trump has previously won the state over in 2016 and 2020.

3.02pm — Harris sees victory in California and Washington, while Trump wins over Idaho

In an unsurprising result, Harris has won the state of California. The Vice President has previously served the democratic state as a US Senator and attorney general, so the outcome was expected.

Alongside a victory in Cali, Harris also won over Washington. As per the AP, Washington is a state in which Trump is “not popular”. Sorry, Regina.

As for Trump, the former US president saw victory in Idaho, which is a “deeply red” state.

2.57pm — OK IDC If there are too many memes, mama’s gonna cleanse her palate

2.42pm — Trump nabs Iowa and Kansas

In a recent AP Race Call update, Trump has seen victory in Iowa and Kansas.

2.37pm — Anthony Albanese says the Australian Government will build a strong relationship with the next US President

On Wednesday (Australia time), Prime Minister Anthony Albanese vowed that Australia will “build a strong partnership” with whoever wins America’s Next Top Model — I mean — US presidential election.

“The election of a new President of the United States is always a moment of profound consequence for the world, for our region and for Australia,” Albanese said, per AP.

“Our government will seek and build a strong partnership with whoever the American people choose as their next president. The alliance between Australia and the United States has always been bigger than individuals.”

2.29pm — Just some brain rot to keep you balanced with the serious shit

2.22pm — Harris clutches District of Columbia

Alongside AP’s recent call for Colorado, the Vice President has also nabbed the District of Columbia. This comes as no surprise as the District has had strong Democratic ties for yonks.

2.11pm — Harris wins Colorado

The AP has reported that Harris has seen victory in Colorado. Per the publication, the state was previously a purple state but has been mostly blue in the last two decades.

2.03pm — Trump bags Montana and Utah

Following AP’s latest Race Call update, it also reported that Trump has won in Montana and Utah.

1.55pm –Trump wins Missouri (not surprised)

In its most recent Race Call, the AP has reported a victory for Trump in the state of Missouri. This is not a surprise as it’s considered a “reliably conservative state of Missouri”.

1.50pm — Celebrities are doing their bit to encourage punters to vote

Only Murders In The Building star Selena Gomez took to her Instagram Stories, urging fans to “stay in line” even if polls close.

“I hear that there are really, really long lines today and I just wanted to make this video really quick to say please stay in the line,” she began.

“Long lines are really frustrating and annoying and I know they’re not fun but we need your voice.”

According to the AP, actor Paul Rudd gave out water to students in Philadelphia while Jennifer Garner, Josh Gad, Mark Cuban and Demi Lovato spoke to voters through FaceTime in different battleground states.

1.41pm — Fani Willis, the Georgia DA who’s prosecuting Donald Trump, has been re-elected

As per The Guardian, Frani Willis who has charged Donald Trump over his attempt to overturn the 2020 election results has been re-elected.

According to the publication, Trump’s lawyers have tried to have her removed from the case, which is currently ongoing.

1.28pm — How it feels to be running this live blog

1.18pm — Here’s a bag of memes just to put your mind at ease

1.08pm — More early results and I’m feeling a little spooky

The AP has updated its race call with Trump, bagging Texas, Nebraska, Ohio, Louisiana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota.

Harris has nabbed New York, which is no surprise for the blue state.

12:55pm —- lol.

12.46pm — How this baddie perceives the US election

Although it is quite daunting, we cannot help but sometimes laugh at our friends across the pond.

Here’s a cheeky Twitter post (yes, I’m calling it Twitter and not X, both in protest of Elon Musty and as a Grimes stan) that reminds me of what’s happening right now.

12.38pm — *Maury Povich voice* More early results are in

In an update by the Associated Press, Harris has reportedly seen victory in Delaware and New Jersey.

Arkansas has been reportedly won over by Trump.

12.32pm — Sabrina Carpenter AKA “Me Espresso” leaves quite the impression

According to Missing Perspectives, the “Bed Chem” singer has “engaged more people through HeadCount than any artists in 2024” after 35,814 registered voters attended her Short ‘n Sweet Tour whilst engaged with 263,087 voters outside of registration.

Icon behaviour!!!

12:24pm — Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester becomes Delaware’s first Black female senator

After a triumphant run for Delaware’s Senate seat, Lisa Blunt Rochester made history by becoming the first woman and first African American to represent the state in Congress’s upper chamber, according to the Associated Press.

12:10pm — Here’s which states Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have bagged so far

Oh me oh my. If the race to the White House wasn’t dramatic enough, consider the early results some real spooky stuff!

Per the Associated Press (AP), Trump has seen victory in Oklahoma, South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana.

Vermont, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut have been called for Harris.

11:45am – Early results are in (but don’t take it to heart just yet!!!)

As it stands, Harris has claimed three seats while Trump has nabbed 23. Harris is currently sitting on 44.1 per cent of the popular vote and Trump has 55 per cent.

I know what you’re thinking – it’s only been an hour since the polling booths closed. How on earth do they know who claimed each state seat so soon?!?!

Well, according to the ABC, the Associated Press only declares the winner of each state race if the polls “show a candidate leading by at least 15 percentage points.”

With that said, that’s me (Laura, remember?) signing off for a bit! I’m going to go have a coffee, sit in the sun, recharge my crystals and mentally prepare for hopping back on this live blog later when things get spicy!!! Until then, you’re in immaculate hands with Bek!

LOVE YOU, BYE!

11:17am – A quick run down on celebrity endorsements

If your X feed is like mine, it would be absolutely filled with celebrities doing last-minute endorsements for their chosen candidate. Here’s a visual snapshot of where the celebs are voting.

Team Kamala

Team Trump

11:09am – Some of the first results are in

According to the Associated Press (AP), Trump has claimed victory over red states Kentucky and Indiana, while Harris has taken Vermont, which is typically a blue state. There aren’t any big surprises here but it’s good to know!

There is currently no update on the results from Virginia, South Carolina and swing state Georgia.

11:03am – Elon Musk will apparently be spending the election night with Trump

No, not like that (…well, to our knowledge, anyway). According to the BBC, Elon Musk — who has been actively campaigning for Trump this election — will be heading over to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home to watch the results pour in.

We’re likely in for a long wait until we know who the next big dog will be. So, I hope Trump has a spare room or Musk brought his sleeping bag with him.

10:47am — A quick explainer on how media outlets declare a winner.

If this is a quick race, by tonight (Australian time) we’ll be seeing headlines from outlets like the Associated Press, CNN or the New York Times calling a winner. (Some outlets rely on AP, others have their own methodology.) Obviously, media outlets don’t actually decide a winner — that’s up to the voters — but they do call it.

There’s no central voting system in the United States. Instead, there are tens of thousands of local precincts across the country, all with their different methodologies. Some have direct feeds, some post it on their websites, and one county quite literally takes a picture of their whiteboard and posts it to Facebook, according to The Guardian. Bless.

AP’s race callers start their work months before election day, studying election rules, recount requirements, polls and voting history.

Once AP is confident a race has been won — in other words, that no trailing candidate has a path to victory — they’ll call the election.

Last time, in 2020, it took four days for AP to declare Joe Biden the winner. And given how close this race is, we may be in for a similar delay.

10:33am — Trump’s claim about cheating in Philadelphia continues to be debunked

Just on that Philadelphia thing — CNN reports that local police have no idea what Trump is talking about.

10:22am – A cheeky reminder about how this shit works

Now that the first polls have closed, I just wanted to share a cheeky reminder on how things work from here. Once all the polls close, the votes will be counted. This will potentially take hours, even days.

Each state will vote to see if the state seat in The Electoral College will go to the Republicans or the Democrats. The goal here is to claim enough votes in each state to win at least 270 seats of 538 seats in The Electoral College to gain the Presidency.

For the full explainer, you can check out our US election cheat sheet HERE.

10:12am — Obama is back with some wisdom

Out of the many, many people sharing their opinion worldwide on the US election, there are few more qualified than former US President Barack Obama. He shared a tidbit of his sage wisdom on X.

“It took several days to count every ballot in 2020, and it’s very likely we won’t know the outcome tonight either. So please keep a few things in mind as you make your voice heard today,” he wrote.

“Thousands of election workers around the country are working hard today. Respect them. Thank them.

“Don’t share things before checking your sources. Let the process run its course. It takes time to count every ballot.”

9:52am – Trump’s claim that there are whispers of cheating in Philadelphia debunked

About an hour ago, Trump took to the conservative social media site Truth Social claiming that he had heard whispers of cheating happening in swing state Philadelphia.

(Image: Donald Trump / Truth Social)

Now, Republican Philadelphia city commissioner Seth Bluestein has slammed this claim, saying there is “no truth” in the allegation.

“We have been in regular contact with the RNC [Republican National Committee],” he continued in another Tweet.

“We have been responsive to every report of irregularities at the polls to ensure Philadelphians can vote safely and securely.”

9:42am – A fun lil’ break for memes that made me snort at my desk

The beauty of doing this live blog is that I just get to sit here and scroll through X. I hope you enjoy these Tweets as much as I did.

9:34am – Young people will decide this election

According to the president of the youth voting organisation NextGen America, Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez, it’s the young guns that hold the power in this election.

“Young people will decide this election. From local ballot initiatives to federal races, we know this critical bloc is showing up for their futures and making their voices heard,” she said, per The Guardian.

“We are proud of our work this cycle on the ground and online to educate, mobilize, and empower young voters, contributing to a culture of civic engagement that will extend beyond this election.

“Young people are showing up, turning out, and using their collective power to elect leaders that represent our values — today and into the future.”

Now that’s something I can get behind!

9:30am – Half an hour until the first polls close!!!!

Oh boy, the juicy bit is about to begin! At 10am AEST, the first polls in Indiana and Kentucky will close. Then, at 11am AEST, we’ve got Florida, Georgia and North Carolina.

To be totally honest though, the most exciting one is Pennsylvania at 12pm AEST and then most of the remaining swing states at 1pm AEST.

9:22am – Melania Trump continues wearing sunnies inside, fuels fake Melania conspiracy

I know this isn’t exactly news, but I think it’s worth noting that Melania Trump is doing absolutely nothing for the fake body double allegations by continuing to wear sunglasses inside. Shit like this really lights up the internet.

It reminds me of the time my mum was trying to be a subtle, kindhearted gossip by asking me if my friend had an eye condition when really he was just high out of his mind and kept his sunnies on to hide how blazed he was. Bless up!!!!

9:08am — Even the astronauts stuck in space managed to vote

Remember the NASA astronauts who were launched into space for an eight-day mission only to be stuck on the International Space Station there after a heap of tech issues? Well, even after being in space for more than four months, they’ve managed to cast their votes in the US presidential election.

Astronauts Butch Wilmore, Don Petit, Nick Hague and Suni Williams shared a picture on Hague’s Instagram to encourage American punters to do the same.

“It doesn’t matter if you are sitting, standing, or floating — what matters is that you vote!” Hague wrote in the caption.

(Image: Nick Hague / Instagram)

8:56am – Americans prepare for potential civil unrest

Windows have reportedly been boarded up and security measures have been put in place at The White House, Harris’ residence and surrounding businesses in Washington, DC just in case civil unrest occurs following the election result.

According to The Daily Mail, fights have been breaking out at polling stations with police being on high alert in case any further violence occurs.

The worry stems from the civil unrest and chaos that occurred following the 2020 election.

8:00am — Rihanna continues to fight people in the comment section

I love this goddamn woman so much.

7:47am – Donald Trump has cast his vote

Trump has cast his ballot in Florida alongside his wife Melania Trump. Although some conspiracy theorists on X reckon that they’ve wheeled out fake Melania for this appearance. Do with that information what you will.

I know what you’re thinking: how on earth can Trump — who is a convicted felon — vote in the presidential election? Well, it all boils down to state law.

Trump has been convicted of 34 felony charges in the state of New York. However, as he is casting his ballot in Florida, he follows Florida state law. According to Florida state law, the state of conviction determines whether the convicted person is allowed to vote, and New York law states that convicted felons are allowed to vote as long as they’re not incarcerated.

So, considering Trump’s sentencing is currently locked and loaded for November 26, he’s all good to vote — even if his sentencing could potentially result in probation of jail time.

Isn’t it wild that the potential second-time President of the USA is facing jail time? Bonkers times we live in, folks!!!!!

7:41am – Donald Trump’s encouraging TikTok for Republicans

Trump has taken to TikTok with an encouraging little video for his supporters.

“Republicans, we’re doing really well,” he began.

“Stay online, don’t get offline and vote, make sure you get through and vote. We’re gonna have a big victory tonight.”

@realdonaldtrump

TODAY IS THE DAY — GET OUT AND VOTE!

♬ original sound – President Donald J Trump

7:27am — Here’s where we stand

Okay so right now, the polls are still open across the US. We’ve still got a few more hours for US citizens to cast their votes but here is everything you missed while you were getting your gorgeous beauty sleep.

Harris has been popping off on X (formerly Twitter) encouraging people to vote with the slogan, “When we vote, we win.”

Meanwhile, whilst speaking to reporters in Florida, Trump said that he would happily concede defeat to Harris as long as it was a “fair election”.

“If I lose an election, if it’s a fair election, I would be the first one to acknowledge it… So far I think it’s been fair,” he said, per The Straits Times.

However, he also continued to critique the use of electronic voting machines, claiming that they were less reliable than paper ballots and it would delay the final outcome.

“They spend all this money on machines… If they would use paper ballots, voter ID, proof of citizenship, and one-day voting, it would all be over by 10 o’clock in the evening. It’s crazy,” he told reporters.

“Do you know that paper is more sophisticated now than computers? If it’s watermarked paper you cannot… It’s unbelievable what happens with it. There’s nothing you can do to cheat.”

I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on that one, champ.

Overnight, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama made final pleas for voters to rock up to the polls and have their voices heard.

7:14am – Bad girl RiRi lives up to her name 🫡

She may not technically be a citizen of the United States but that doesn’t stop Rihanna from having some ~strong~ feelings about the election.

“POV: me trying to sneak into the polls with my son’s passport #votecauseicant,” she wrote in a video posted to Instagram. She captioned it with: “When protecting pussies and firing pussies can happen all in one vote #votecauseicant #TanSuitSeason“.

(Image: Instagram / Rihanna)

However, some people took offence to her lil’ joke.

“Why should you be able to if you are not a legal citizen?” a salty commenter wrote. Thankfully, Miss Girl had a thoughtful response.

(Image: Instagram / Rihanna)

Don’t we all, doll?
