The Houston Texans made a few low-profile moves on the first day of the legal tampering period.
Houston added a couple of reserve players on defense and on special teams and re-signed a few in-house free agents. None of the deals the Texans agreed to sign Monday can be officially signed until the new league year begins on March 13 at 4 p.m. ET.
The Texans entered the offseason with around $70 million and now have around $56 million in salary cap space, according to Over The Cap. This is as of March 11 at 7 p.m. ET. That mark still ranks sixth in the NFL and gives general manager Nick Caserio a lot of financial flexibility heading into the rest of the offseason and into the 2024 NFL draft.
Tight end Dalton Schultz, kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn and new defensive end Denico Autry affected the cap the most with their contracts. Schultz will count around $8 million against the cap this season, while Fairbairn has a $3.6 million cap hit in 2024. The full breakdown of Autry’s deal isn’t out yet, but he’ll make around $10.5 million guaranteed over his two-year, $20 million deal.
