The NFL draft is finally here!
Well, it’s sort of here from the 49ers’ perspective.
San Francisco’s slew of trades over the last couple years, combined with compensatory selections have left them with 11 picks. While the quantity of the draft capital is strong, the quality isn’t.
The NFL draft is set to begin tonight at 5:00pm Pacific Time, and will finish out Saturday.
There’s a very good chance the 49ers use some of their draft capital to move up when they can, but there aren’t many scenarios where they wind up with any premium draft picks.
With the draft taking place over the next three days, here’s when San Francisco is scheduled to pick on each of them:
Day 1: Thursday
Rounds: 1
Picks: None
The final ripples from the Trey Lance trade will fade out when with the 29th overall pick this year. San Francisco sent that selection to the Dolphins before the 2021 draft. It’s changed hands a couple times and now resides with the Saints.
Barring some major, unforeseen trade, the 49ers won’t be picking Thursday.
Day 2: Friday
Rounds: 2 and 3
Picks:
Round 3, No. 99 overall (Compensatory)
Round 3, No. 101 overall (Compensatory)
Round 3, No. 102 overall (Compensatory)
This is where things get interesting, and while the team isn’t slated to pick early on Day 2, 49ers fans should probably be keeping an eye on the proceedings because 11 picks, including the trio of Round 3 selections, make them a candidate to jump up into the second round. Day 2 will kick off at 4:00pm Pacific.
Day 3: Saturday
Rounds: 4, 5, 6 and 7
Picks:
Round 5, Pick 155
Round 5, Pick 164
Round 5, Pick 173 (via MIA)
Round 6, Pick 216 (Compensatory)
Round 7, Pick 222 (via DEN)
Round 7, Pick 247
Round 7, Pick 253 (Compensatory)
Round 7, Pick 255 (Compensatory)
Now it’s party time! Eight Day 3 picks is a hilarious amount of draft capital. Chances are they’ll move off some of these with trades, so keep a close eye out on Day 3 with San Francisco potentially moving around the board multiple times to turn some of their quantity into quality. These picks begin early with a 9:00am Pacific scheduled start time.
