A 20-year-old man, identified as Caden Mura of Valparaiso, was fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire with Valparaiso and Porter County officers in northwestern Indiana. The incident occurred on Thursday near Valparaiso's Fairgrounds Park.
According to court records, Mura had a history of resisting law enforcement, having pleaded guilty to a charge of resisting law enforcement last fall. The circumstances surrounding Thursday's incident are still under investigation, with the cause and manner of death pending an autopsy and toxicology results, as confirmed by the Porter County Coroner’s Office.
Indiana State Police, who are leading the investigation due to the nature of the shooting, reported that officers responded to a call about a suspicious person displaying a handgun. Upon approaching the suspect, later identified as Mura, he fled, leading to a foot pursuit during which an exchange of gunfire took place.
Mura sustained gunshot wounds during the shootout and was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The investigation into the incident is ongoing as authorities work to gather more information and determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal outcome.
