So you've just got the exciting news that your close friend or family member is about to tie the knot, but beyond a celebratory card or message, you might not be sure what to gift them. Unlike the best wedding gifts, there isn't a registry or gift list to shop from and you might want to save a larger gift for the wedding itself. So, what exactly makes a great engagement present? And how much should you spend? Luckily, we chatted to a range of wedding etiquette and engagement gift-buying experts to answer those very questions.

Engagement gift giving advice

What do you give as engagement gifts and how do they differ from a wedding present?

Quite simply, an engagement gift is given to celebrate their engagement rather than the rest of their life together.

"Engagement gifts are typically given by close friends, family members, or loved ones," owner and founder of Luxe & Bloom Tawni McAleer tells w&h. "On the other hand, a wedding gift is given to commemorate the couple's wedding day and is traditionally given by guests attending the wedding ceremony." McAleer further explains how wedding gifts are usually household items or experiences for the couple to enjoy.

Commerce editor for The Knot Cathryn Haight tells us that engagement gifts can be smaller, less expensive, and something fun you pick out yourself since there's no registry to shop from. "Some of our favorite options include a wedding magazine subscription, fancy chocolates, a duo of toasting glasses, a bouquet of blooms, and of course, a bottle of bubbly," Haight says. "Remember to choose an engagement gift that both members of the couple can enjoy."

Is an engagement gift necessary?

An engagement gift isn't required, but it is a thoughtful way to show your support and congratulate the couple, especially if you're close. It ultimately depends on your relationship with the couple.

"Whether or not you want to decide to give someone an engagement gift will depend on a variety of factors, including your relationship with the person and the closeness of that relationship," Bishop says. "If it's your best friend and you're really excited for her, of course, you might want to give her something in celebration. If it's a casual acquaintance or coworker, you might not."

But whether you decide to give a gift or not, Haight suggests sending a heartfelt handwritten engagement card expressing your excitement for the couple's next chapter.

What is an appropriate amount to spend on an engagement gift?

The amount you spend on an engagement gift is strictly up to you and ultimately depends on your budget and relationship with the recipient. "Giving anything from a bottle of wine to a donation to their honeymoon fund is a nice gesture. If you're in a position to give more and have a close relationship with the couple, you don't have to hold back," Bishop says.

Can you give cash or gift cards as an engagement gift?

McAleer deems cash and gift cards to be an appropriate and great engagement gift option, as it gives the couple the flexibility to use the funds as they wish. But, if you want to make the gift even more special and memorable, McAleer recommends pairing the cash or gift card with a gift box.

"A gift box can add an extra touch of sentiment and surprise, offering a tangible and delightful experience for the couple," McAleer says. "It allows you to tailor the contents to their preferences, whether it's a selection of their favorite treats or items for their new life together."
