2 women held in Bengaluru for robbing rail passengers

BENGALURU: Two women were arrested by railway police recently for allegedly stealing valuables from passengers by distracting them while boarding or deboarding trains.

Roopa alias Anitha alias Gayathri alias Lavanya, 33, and Saranya alias Lavanya alias Sandhya alias Jamuna, 28, are residents of Hosur in Tamil Nadu. Around 200 grams of gold worth over Rs 10 lakh were recovered from them. Police said the women would carry infants with them and seek other passengers’ help in getting in and out of trains. Another member of the gang would steal valuables from such passengers’ bags while they were busy handling the baby.

Railway police found the suspects wandering around suspiciously on the platform at KR Puram station on May 11. They were picked up and said to have confessed. The accused have cases against them at police stations in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
